Junior dos Santos and Tim Boetsch show off their bruised post UFC-155 faces

Junior dos Santos and Tim Boetsch both walked away from UFC 155 with losses. They also walked away with seriously, seriously beat-up faces, as shown in this picture from the hospital.

UFC president Dana White originally suggested that dos Santos suffered a broken jaw from his five-round, title loss to Cain Velasquez, but tests reportedly came back negative. Boetsch had a huge cut during his loss to Costa Philippou, which is pretty easy to find in the above picture.

(AP) ? Taylor Kelly, Marion Grice and the rest of the Arizona State offense put an emphatic finish on coach Todd Graham's successful first season with the Sun Devils.

Kelly threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth score to lead Arizona State to its first bowl win in seven years, a 62-28 victory over Navy in the Fight Hunger Bowl on Saturday.

Offensive MVP Marion Grice ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns for the Sun Devils (8-5), who used their fast-paced spread offense to score touchdowns on their first nine possessions.

"Our guys came to play today and dominated," Graham said. "I'm proud of them."

The Sun Devils won their most games since 2007 and won a bowl for the first time since the 2005 Insight Bowl against Rutgers. They also capped their season by beating rival Arizona and winning a bowl, a feat they had accomplished just once in the past 33 seasons.

"This win means a lot ? 1978 is a long time," said Rashad Ross, who caught three touchdown passes. "I'm just glad to be on this team, the team that finally did it: Beat U of A and then go on and win a bowl game."

The Midshipmen (8-5) have lost five of their last six bowl games. Among the few highlights for Navy were Keenan Reynolds' 3-yard TD pass to Matt Aiken in the first half and a 95-yard kickoff return for a score by Gee Gee Greene in the third quarter.

Rashad Ross, who grew up in nearby Vallejo, started and ended the first-half outburst with touchdown receptions. His 16-yard catch from Kelly capped a 75-yard game-opening drive and he got behind the Navy defense for a 52-yard score in the final minute of the half to make it 34-7. Ross then caught a 50-yard TD pass on Arizona State's first drive of the second half to make it 41-7.

Grice, playing with a heavy heart after his brother was murdered last week in Houston, scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter and a 39-yarder in the third. He had 19 touchdowns this season, with 11 coming on the ground.

"We opened our arms out for Marion," Kelly said. "We're all with him. He's in our prayers and our family. He's having a hard time in the locker room or he'd be out here. He's all into this program. He wanted to come out and play for his brother and his family and also our brothers."

Much of the talk leading up to the game was how Arizona State would handle Navy's unique triple-option offense. It turned out that the Midshipmen had much more trouble with the Sun Devils' spread, giving up 648 yards.

"We couldn't stop them," linebacker Brye French said. "Everything that they would try, they just dominated us in basically every aspect of the game. It was very frustrating but you have to give them credit. They had a great game plan. They executed on everything. They had the deep ball, they had the run, they had the short pass. They had a great game plan and we just couldn't stop them."

Arizona State had seven touchdown drives of at least 60 yards in the first three quarters and had just three third-down plays in that span as Kelly easily picked apart the defense. The longest drive took just 2:43 and one of the quickest came at the end of the half when the Sun Devils went 80 yards in two plays covering 19 seconds after Nick Sloan missed a 33-yard field goal for Navy.

Kelly finished 17 for 19 for 268 yards, ending the season completing a school-record 67.1 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 81 yards, scoring on a 1-yard run that made it 21-0.

The Midshipmen had a few opportunities to keep the game close on offense in the first half but Greene was unable to hold onto a pass in the end zone on fourth-and-7 from the 31 in the first quarter and Reynolds lost 3 yards on a third-and-1 keeper from the 8 before Sloan's missed field goal.

"We kind of shot ourselves in the foot a couple times when we couldn't score," Reynolds said. "We could have put ourselves in the game ... but if you don't score points you don't win the game, no matter what goes on on the opposite side of the football."

Sen. John McCain, a former Navy fighter pilot who represents Arizona in Congress, handled the pregame toss. Instead of using a coin, the game sponsored by Kraft uses an Oreo, with one side being a chocolate cookie and the other vanilla.

Before that, Pat Tillman Sr. presented Sun Devils defensive tackle Will Sutton the Pac-12 defensive player of the year award named after his son, the former ASU star who died as an Army ranger in Afghanistan.

Sutton had 2 1/2 sacks to win defensive player of the game as the Sun Devils kept Navy grounded until the reserves took over on defense in the fourth quarter.

"I hope we never play that triple option again," Sutton said. "We handled it real well. We've been practicing about a month for this game. In due time, we were going to get it down. We did and we came and had a good game."

Last-minute deal averts East Coast port strike

13 hrs.

A strike that could have crippled 15 major ports on the East Coast and the Gulf and put a crimp in the nation's commerce?has been avoided after dock workers, port operators?and shippers agreed to a deal that extends the workers' contract, a federal mediator said Friday.

The parties settled on a 30-day extension of the contract after a meeting Thursday with Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen, the FMCS said in a statement.

The parties had faced a Saturday deadline for resolving the labor dispute. The International?Longshoremen's Association, which represented the dock workers, had threatened to strike a day later.

The strike would have shut down major ports, including the port of New York and New Jersey, the largest on the East Coast and the second-largest port in the U.S. to handle manufactured goods from China.

Earlier Friday, The White House had urged the parties to resolve their differences. The dispute centered on a cap to payments to dock workers based on the weight of the container cargo, known as "container royalties."

The new contract does not eliminate the royalty payments, according to Benny Holland, an executive vice president for the ILA.

"The royalty will stay intact. We have worked out a formula for it," he said in an interview.

Established in 1960, the royalty payments to ILA workers are based on the tons of container cargo that move through a port. That tonnage has risen from 50 million tons in 1996 to 110 million last year, according to the alliance. Total payments last year were $211 million, according to the USMX, or an average of $15,500 per worker.

The original idea was to protect longshoremen from wage losses expected as a result of "containerization," in which more and more goods are packed in the now-familiar 20- and 40-foot long boxes. Those take less manpower to off-load than the less-standardized containers they replaced.

Both sides also fought over the guaranteed eight-hour workday in the current contract and the seven-man "lashing gang." Lashing crews, or gangs, secure the cargo containers to the vessel using metal lashing rods to keep them from moving while the vessel is at sea. The maritime alliance wanted to eliminate each.

?The container royalty payment issue has been agreed upon in principle by the parties, subject to?achieving an overall collective bargaining agreement. The parties have further agreed to an?additional extension of 30 days (i.e., until midnight, January 28, 2013) during which time the?parties shall negotiate all remaining outstanding Master Agreement issues, including those?relating to New York and New Jersey," the federal mediator's statement said.

10 Best Cardio Exercises to Burn The Most Calories | Truth N Health

Cardio is one of the most important things you can do for your body, whether you want to lose weight, build muscle or improve your health.? The great thing is, there are plenty of choices for cardio exercise.? Anything that gets your heart rate into your target heart rate zone will work.? The confusing thing is, there are so many choices out there?which exercises are the most effective? There?s no ?right? cardio exercise and the best choice is the one you enjoy and the one you?ll work hardest at, but there are some that work best if your goal is to blast calories and get in great shape.

1. Running is my favorite cardio exercise and is great choice for a variety of reasons:

?It does not require special equipment (except some running shoes)

?You can do it just about anytime, anywhere

?It is high impact, which helps build strong bones and connective tissue

?It gets your heart rate up more quickly than low or no impact exercise

?It helps you burn serious calories, especially if you add hills, sprints or try interval training.

In fact, a 145-lb person can burn 300 calories by running at 5.2 mph for 30 minutes. The same person would burn about half of that with a brisk walk.? The downside is that it takes time to build the strength and stamina to run continuously and, because it?s high impact, it may not work for every person.

2. Jumping rope is another calorie-scorcher and, as an added bonus, a jump rope packs easily in your suitcase, making it an excellent travel exercise.? A 145-lb person can burn a whopping 330 calories with a 30-minute workout, but you?ll want to slowly work your way up to that.

Start by jumping for 1-2 minutes at a time, taking breaks by marching in place and swinging your rope in a figure eight motion.? Continue alternating for 10-20 minutes and, over time, gradually increase the amount of time you jump while decreasing your rests.? You can add variety by trying different foot patterns (jumping on one foot, scissor jumps, etc.). I like to jump to energizing music. It keeps be pumped up, especially during a long stint of jumping!

3. Kickboxing is another great choice for exercisers who want to work hard with more choreographed workouts.? Combining kicks and punches not only enhances your coordination, it involves both the upper and lower body, making this an excellent overall workout.

600 calories for a 130 lb, 700 for a 145 lb Kickboxing offers a great full-body workout because it requires you to use every major muscle group and includes interval training. Your heart rate will soar and stabilize several times throughout the class, which is optimal for weight loss.

There are a variety of videos available or you can opt for a class at your local gym to get a more social interaction.? Once you are familiar with different lingo- names of the kicks and punches, you can even create your own workouts or, better yet, use a punching bag to get an even better workout.

4. If you?re looking to burn maximum calories, cross-country skiing is an excellent choice.? Whether you?re on a gym machine or swooshing over miles of snow, cross-country skiing is an incredible cardio exercise. Because it involves both the upper and lower body, it doesn?t take much work to get your heart rate up, which is where the calorie-burn comes in.? A 145-lb person burns about 330 calories during 30 minutes of skiing.

There are a few downsides, however.? If you?re going for the full outdoor experience, there is lots of gear required, and you will need practice to get the hang of it . . . and of course, snow.? You can mimic the movement at the gym by using a Nordic (or similar) cross trainer (such as an elliptical with arms or an Arc Trainer), but machines are never exactly the same.

5. Whether you are outdoors or indoors, cycling (spinning) is an excellent cardio workout. Biking: 600- 900 calories per hour on average depending on the level of resistance and intensity.

You can burn up to 700 calories at your average cycling class or take to the road on your own to enjoy fresh air to boot! Just make sure you keep a pace of about 14 to 16 miles per hour to reach the 700-calorie goal.

By using the power of your legs, you increase endurance while burning lots of calories, anywhere from 250-500 in 30 minutes, depending on how fast you go and how high your resistance is.? What makes cycling even better than other activities is that you can incorporate it into your daily life.? You can ride to and from work or use your bike to run errands around town.? It?s also low impact, which is great for your joints and perfect cross-training for high impact activities like running or aerobics.

6. Often found next to the treadmills, the elliptical trainer is another popular cardio machine at the gym. The elliptical trainer allows your body to move in a natural way, but without the impact of the treadmill.? Intensity can be added by increasing resistance and some machines include adjustable ramps and arm handles for added intensity as well.? As a bonus, you can go backwards on an elliptical trainer, which helps people burn 11% more calories than cycling forward, adding variety while working your muscles in a different way.

The elliptical trainer is also a good choice for runners looking for a break from pounding the pavement. A 145-lb person burns about 300 calories in 30 minutes.

7. Swimming is another great choice because, like cross-country skiing, it?s a full body exercise. The more body parts you involve in your workout, the more calories you?ll burn. Spend 30 minutes doing the breaststroke and you?ll burn almost 400 calories. Best of all, your joints are fully supported so you don?t have to worry about high-impact injuries. It?s also great cross-training for other cardio activities.

8. Zumba or Aerobic Classes: 500-650 or more calories per hour

Who knew an hour of dancing and hopping around could produce such results?! Zumba is a very popular Latin-inspired dance workout which uses the principles of interval training and resistance exercise, the workout will boost your metabolism considerably, according to FitnessZumba.com.? However, like any fitness regimen, the number of calories burned varies from person to person depending on weight, sex, current fitness level, and how a hard a person works out. Still the massive weight loss and toning benefits of hip-swishing and shimmying make Zumba and similar aerobics class workouts a few of the most popular today.

Step aerobics, for example, is another great choice, particularly for people who like choreographed workouts, but do not enjoy the jackhammer feel of high impact aerobics.? The step offers intensity without the pounding and it?s easy to up the energy by adding risers.

It?s also a great calorie-burner, targeting your legs, butt and hips while burning 300-400 calories in 30 minutes (during high intensity sessions). Though it might look complicated, step is easy to learn if you start with a beginner class or video.

This is an often overlooked machine in the gym because we?re confused about how it works and, perhaps, aren?t sure it delivers a great workout.

9. Rowing is a physically demanding exercise involving both the upper and lower body, which means a higher heart rate and a greater calorie burn.? Like an elliptical trainer or stationary bike, there are different levels of resistance, allowing you to get a challenging workout no matter what your fitness level.?? In 30 minutes, a 145-lb person can burn about 300 calories, but if you?ve never tried rowing, it can be tough.? Start with 10-15 minutes and add time to subsequent workouts to give your body time to adapt.

?

10. Walking is another great choice for cardio because, like running, it?s accessible:? You don?t need special equipment and you can do it anywhere, anytime.? It?s harder to get your heart rate up with walking since it is low impact but, if you work hard at it, a 145-lb person can burn about 180 calories in 30 minutes.

Adding hills, hiking, speed walking or using walking poles can also increase the intensity.? Make sure you walk briskly. Keep the head up, back straight, engage and tighten your core and swing the arms.

'Do something!' Americans fed up with D.C. over 'cliff'

Americans from across the country express their frustration with lawmakers in Washington who have yet to reach an agreement on averting looming tax increases.

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker said Friday that ?the American people should be disgusted? the nation?s leaders haven?t been able to avert the fiscal cliff.

Well, mission accomplished.

John Makely / NBC News

Abigail Holt, 17, (right), of Hartford, Conn., says Washington's inability to avert the fiscal cliff is "annoying."

Across the country, people are shaking their heads about negotiations that go nowhere and fingers that point everywhere while the nation hurtles toward the precipice of a new economic crisis.

?They should make a plan, make up their minds and do something!? Abigail Holt of Hartford, Conn., told NBC News.

She?s 17 years old and admits she?s just learning about the federal government and the fiscal cliff. But she knows this much: ?It?s annoying.?

And that's being polite.

Writing in the Daily Beast, Howard Kurtz called the nation's capital "the country?s biggest day-care center." The famous sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer hit below the belt, noting on Twitter that "Members of Congress who can't compromise probably aren't good lovers."

Californian Pat Marshall said the politicians "appear to be very self-centered on making sure that they?re taken care of and the American public comes second."

After an hourlong meeting Friday with congressional leaders that he described as "constructive," President Obama acknowledged that people outside Washington were bewildered by D.C. "dysfunction" and that time -- and patience -- were running out.

Lawmakers have 'lost touch'
Indeed, with higher taxes and deep spending cuts looming without a deal, Americans? faith in Washington is dissipating by the day.

A Dec. 9 Gallup poll found that 59 percent thought it was likely the White House and Congress could hammer out a deal to avoid a slide down the cliff; by this week, that had sunk to 50 percent.

Skeptics were gaining ground, meanwhile: 48 percent think an agreement before the year-end deadline is unlikely, up 10 points from two weeks earlier.

John Makely / NBC News

Rich Dodds, 49, of Houston, Texas, says the elected officials in Washington have "lost touch" with Americans who will be affected by the fiscal cliff.

?It doesn?t feel like they?re doing much,? said Rich Dodds, 49, an energy product manager from Houston, Texas. ?I think they?ve lost touch with who the American people are. It?s a pretty elite group in Washington.?

The fact that both houses of Congress went into recess -- the Senate took a nearly week-long break, and the House is still on vacation until Sunday -- bothered some.

?This is one of the most important issues and they are not even working,? said Bill Prosser, 49, a telecommunications salesman from Clifton, Va. ?I?m very disappointed in them.?

Nicole Hayward, 28, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was so angered by the congressional recess that she posted a petition on Change.org demanding lawmakers get back to business.

?I turn on the news every day while I?m getting ready for work and I saw coverage about how Congress was going to break for the holidays and we might not have a resolution,? the marketing director said. ?I thought, who cares about their holiday vacation? It really got me going.?

Hayward got only 101 signatures on her petition. She attributed the lack of interest to cynicism.

?The reason why the average American doesn?t pay attention to this issue and the details is they think Congress will come together and pass something that just kicks the can down the road and things won?t change in [their] life,? she said.

John Makely / NBC News

Bill Prosser, 49, of Clifton, Va., says members of Congress should be locked in a room until they can make a deal.

Bipartisan blame
Inside the Beltway, Democrats are condemning Republicans and vice versa for the stalemate. But the nation?s voters are more bipartisan in their blame, with neither Republicans nor Democrats obtaining majority support.

?Essentially, right now, 25 percent of the public approves of the job the GOP congressional leaders are doing and 40 percent approves of the job the Democratic leaders are doing,? said Jocelyn Kiley, a senior researcher for the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Prosser thinks there?s a time-tested way to bring the two sides together before Jan. 1 -- something akin to the old papal conclaves in which cardinals were locked in a room until they chose a new pontiff.

?Just say you?re not going to leave until you have a deal,? Prosser said.? ?Get in a room -- and get it done!?

Who do you blame for the nation teetering on the edge of the fiscal cliff?

?

Video shows woman pushing man in front of NYC subway train

NEW YORK (AP) ? A surveillance video of the woman suspected of pushing a man to his death in front of an oncoming subway train was released Friday by the New York Police Department.

It shows the woman running from the elevated platform in the Queens section of New York City Thursday night.

Witnesses told police she had been following the man closely and mumbling to herself. She got up from a nearby bench and shoved him as the train pulled into the platform.

It did not appear the man noticed her before he was shoved onto the tracks, police said, adding that the condition of the man's body was making it difficult to identify him.

The woman fled, and police were searching for her. She was described as Hispanic, in her 20s, heavyset and about 5-foot-5, wearing a blue, white and gray ski jacket and Nike sneakers with gray on top and red on the bottom.

It was unclear if the man and the woman knew each other or if anyone tried to help the man up before he was struck by the train and killed at the station on Queens Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

It was the second time this month someone has been shoved to their death on subway tracks.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was pushed in front of a train in Times Square. A photograph of him on the tracks a split second before he was killed was published on the front of the New York Post the next day, causing an uproar and debate over whether the photographer, who had been waiting for a train, should have tried to help him and whether the newspaper should have run the image. Apparently no one else tried to help up Han, either.

A homeless man, 30-year-old Naeem Davis, was charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail. He has pleaded not guilty and has said that Han was the aggressor and had attacked him first. The two men hadn't met before.

Being pushed onto the train tracks is a silent fear for many of the commuters who ride the city's subway a total of more than 5.2 million times on an average weekday, but deaths are rare. Among the more high-profile cases was the January 1999 death of aspiring screenwriter Kendra Webdale, who was shoved by a former mental patient. After that, the state Legislature passed Kendra's Law, which lets mental health authorities supervise patients who live outside institutions to make sure they are taking their medications and aren't threats to safety.

Newtown trying to give kids a sense of normalcy

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? The children at the Sandy Hook Elementary school won't be returning to classes for another week, but officials from the town, school district and local agencies are doing their best in the meantime to keep them occupied following a massacre at their school two weeks ago.

The students have not attended school since a gunman killed 20 of their schoolmates and six adults on Dec. 14. They are slated to return to a different school next Thursday.

In the meantime, they've been treated to field trips, toy giveaways and some organized play time.

"A couple of the teachers have done pizza parties," said Janet Robinson, Newtown's school superintendent. "Another met her kids at the library so they could have a little reading time together. The most important thing has been connecting the students back to their teacher and their classmates."

The Newtown Youth Academy, a nonprofit sports center, opened its doors to all kids in town at no cost shortly after the shooting. But from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. last week, the building's turf field, basketball and tennis courts, and giant inflatable obstacle course were reserved just for Sandy Hook Elementary students.

There have been arts and crafts for the smaller kids, as well as face-paintings. Some celebrities, including two members of the Harlem Globetrotters and former University of Connecticut basketball star Tina Charles, also have stopped by to play with the children. UConn's men's basketball team was making a trip Thursday.

"The idea was to get them away from the house, the television and all the coverage of this tragedy and get them to a place where kids can just be kids," said owner Peter D'Amico, a longtime youth coach in town.

On Thursday afternoon, school buses were loading up at the Youth Academy for a trip to Stamford and a larger complex, Chelsea Piers, which also has ice rinks and an indoor swimming pool, he said. Sports celebrities, such as Brooklyn Nets forward Kris Humphries, planned to meet them there. No media were allowed.

University of Connecticut psychologist Julian Ford, who spent time counseling in Newtown in the first days after the shooting, said it's important for the grieving process to include an outlet that lets children know that while things will never be the same, it's OK to enjoy life.

"They are all going to be thinking about what happened," he said. "That, unfortunately, is inescapable. But this gives them a chance to say, 'Life is carrying on.' Nothing will be the same, but it's also continuing in ways that it should be."

Some students and their parents on Thursday toured the Chalk Hill school in Monroe, a former middle school being reopened next week for the Sandy Hook students. An open house is planned for Wednesday.

"Getting back into the school is like getting back on the horse," Robinson said. "Some of the scariness is gone once they cross that threshold. They are just so happy to see their teachers."

State police said they plan to keep their contact with the children to a minimum as they continue investigating the shooting.

"We certainly don't want to traumatize them any more than they've already been traumatized," said Lt. J. Paul Vance, the department's spokesman. "If (an interview is) not necessary it won't be done. Our investigators will make all those determinations."

In the meantime, Ford has encouraged parents to keep the kids involved in a normal holiday routine and deal with the tragedy as it comes up, rather than making it a focal point of their lives.

David Connors, who has 8-year-old triplets who attend Sandy Hook, said he and his wife have made play dates with their friends, brought the kids to see family for the holidays and participated in the class get-togethers and recreation events.

"That's been, I think, helpful at least in the short term just to kind of keep them doing things, keep them seeing their friends and being nearby and talking to family," Connors said.

Todd Wood of Newtown has five children, the youngest age 4 and the oldest in college. His children's piano teacher lost a child in the shooting, and the family knows other victims as well.

He said he's found that each child has reacted differently to the tragedy. He said he is not making the shooting the center of his family's life but is not pretending it didn't happen, either.

"We did Christmas, we had our lights here, we've tried to make things as normal as possible," he said. "But we also went down to see the memorials. I don't want to shield them from it. I want to let them grieve in their own way."

Ford said that is healthy. He said children will remember their friends as they go about doing normal kid things.

Chris Wolcott, the sport's academy's operations manager, said the best part of having the kids at the center is that the tragedy is pushed aside, at least for a little while.

"A couple times someone would drop a weight (in the facility's health center) and you would hear a bang and there would be a kid who would freeze for a second," he said. "But that would last a split-second. Most of the time, everyone just had a great time."

THPRD plans delayed for field for disabled athletes at Somerset ...

Plans to build an outdoor field for athletes with disabilities at Somerset West Park ? the first of its kind in Oregon ? are moving slower than hoped, and full funding is not yet in place.

The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District said in August that a master plan for the 6-acre park north of U.S. 26 would be presented to the public by the end of the year. It will probably be early 2013 before public meetings are held, said Bob Wayt, spokesman for the district.

The district authorized a $496,500 contract in October with architecture firm 2.ink Studio to design the park. Once the master plan is finalized, it could be brought to the district for approval in the spring.

Around $1.5 million has been allocated from the district?s 2008 bond measure to pay for the park upgrades, and the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation is expected to raise between $1.7 million and $2.1 million for the project, according to a September staff report. The full cost is estimated around $4.4 million, according to the report.

To cover the difference, the project could be built in phases, or bond money from other areas could be reallocated toward the park, the report said.

Once completed, the park will include a baseball field with dugouts, restrooms bleachers and seating areas that can accommodate people using wheelchairs, walkers and crutches. The site could also include other sports fields.

Wall Street rebounds on House session, but off for 4th day

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell for a fourth day on Thursday, but recovered most of their losses after the House of Representatives, in the barest sign of progress, said it would come back to work on avoiding the "fiscal cliff" this weekend.

It was a jittery session for stocks, with shares falling more than 1 percent after Senate Majority Harry Reid warned a deal was unlikely before the deadline, only to rebound merely on the news that the House would reconvene Sunday, a day before the December 31 "cliff" deadline.

"There's no conviction in the move or the overall market, based on the across-the-board reduction we've seen in volume ... but there will be continued weakness until there's sustained positive direction coming from our leaders," said Joseph Cangemi, managing director at ConvergEx Group, in New York.

The market has been prone to quick reactions to headlines and those moves have sometimes seemed more dramatic because of reduced trading volume. About 5.18 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, well below the daily average so far this year of about 6.48 billion shares.

Investors are looking for any hint that lawmakers will avert the $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts that will start to take effect next week and could push the U.S. economy into recession.

"Markets turned around in a heartbeat, as the House session is the first announcement of anything getting done," said Randy Bateman, chief investment officer of Huntington Asset Management, in Columbus, Ohio, which oversees $14.5 billion in assets. "I'm not convinced it will result in a deal, but you could get enough concessions by both parties to at least avoid the immediacy of going over the cliff."

In a sign of the anxiety, the CBOE Volatility Index <.vix>, or VIX, rose above 20 for the first time since July, suggesting rising worries, but ended up finishing the day down 0.4 percent as the stock market rebounded.

Stocks in the materials and the financial sectors, which are more vulnerable to the economy's performance, bore the brunt of the selling before recovering. Shares of Bank of America fell 0.6 percent to $11.47 while Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold fell 0.7 percent to $33.68.

Some of 2012's biggest gainers bucked the broader trend and rallied, a sign of year-end "window dressing." Expedia Inc was the S&P 500's top percentage gainer, climbing 4.1 percent to $60.30. The price of the online travel agency's stock has doubled this year.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 18.28 points, or 0.14 percent, to 13,096.31 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> declined 1.73 points, or 0.12 percent, to end at 1,418.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> dropped 4.25 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 2,985.91.

Marvell Technology Group fell 3.5 percent to $7.14 after it said it would seek to overturn a jury's finding of patent infringement. The stock had fallen more than 10 percent in the previous session after a jury found the company infringed on patents held by Carnegie Mellon University and ordered the chipmaker to pay $1.17 billion in damages.

The four-day decline marked the S&P 500's longest losing streak in three months. The index has lost 1.8 percent over the period as investors grapple with the possibility that a deal may not be reached until next year.

President Barack Obama arrived back in Washington from Hawaii to restart stalled negotiations with Congress. House Speaker John Boehner and other Republican leaders were to hold a conference call with Republican lawmakers. The expectation was that lawmakers would be told to get back to Washington quickly if the Senate passed a bill.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner announced the first of a series of measures that should push back the date when the U.S. government will hit its legal borrowing authority - a limit known as the debt ceiling - by about two months.

Economic data seemed to confirm worries about the impact of the fiscal cliff on the economy.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer confidence in December fell to 65.1 as the budget crisis dented growing optimism about the economy. The gauge fell more than expected from 71.5 in November.

However, the job market continues to mend. Initial claims for unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000 last week and the four-week moving average fell to the lowest since March 2008.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the New York Stock Exchange by a ratio of about 8 to 7, while on the Nasdaq, about 14 stocks fell for every 11 that rose.

Still single: Loving the holidays before it gets crazy | Friends In ...

I just turned 37 this month and the pressure is on! If I want to get married and have kids soon there is no time like the present to start looking for a wife and future mother of my beautiful children. In the meantime, I have enjoyed being single and the benefits this age allows. My parents, in their 60?s, are thrilled to watch their three sons grow in their careers and as men. My youngest brother is the only one to marry thus far and he and his wife are first in line for grandchildren. As we move closer to the addition of more family members, and the additional fanfare involved, we enjoyed a quiet holiday season this year.

Before you start a family, take a moment to enjoy the past and present, before you get too busy!

My parents are both 67 and my brother Matt and I accompanied them to Christmas Day mass on Sunday. That would have been a much larger production if I had a wife and kids in tow. It was nice to spend some time as adults, enjoying the holiday, without the demands of a young family. When you have a young family you have less time to engage in intelligent conversation, focus on your parents, and reminisce about good years past.

When I do get married and start a family we will collectively raise everyone?s blood pressure as we engage family and friends with our wonderful and overwhelming family. When we engage in launching a family, we put our personalities on the back burner and focus on the kids. Before this happens, and while we are young adults, we all have the opportunity to talk to mom and dad about where we are now and from where we have grown.

Growing up in a professional family means you have certain responsibilities to family and career. Meeting expectations is important and having the time to chat with moms and dads about progress and next steps is easy when you don?t have your own family in the room. Taking advantage of these opportunities while you?re still single is a privilege. When I engage in dialogue about the future I recognize my parents? desire to gauge how my brothers and I are doing and how they react to us. It is so important to continue a dialogue about family member progress when so many people are invested in success.

I know my parents consider me a great ?success,? but I know my wedding and first born child are the real benchmarks on which my mother and father want to hang their hat. The older I am and the further I embrace my career goals, the closer I am to making my own successful family. I hope when I am my parents? age I will appreciate the contributions of my adult children who make their way in the world.

Enjoy your friends and family while you are young and before your time is earmarked for your personal family business. Before long you will be without time to really sit down and talk to your mom and dad about family history and progress.

REFERENCES AND EDUCATION DIRECTORY ? No Child Left ...

The information was supplied by EE IN WISCONSIN, A guide to Wisconsin?s environmental education organizations, programs, materials, and professionals.

Swift Nature Camp aScience Summer Camp endorses these policies.

The Wisconsin No Child Left Inside Coalition is working to develop an Environmental Literacy Plan for Wisconsin that will address the environmental education needs of Wisconsin?s pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade schools and will pay special attention to creating more opportunities to get kids outside. The Plan will recommend a comprehensive strategy to ensure every child graduates with the environmental skills and knowledge needed to contribute to a sustainable future.

Wisconsin has a strong environmental education foundation already established, with active schools, supporting organizations, and abundant opportunities to get outside in rural and urban settings. The Environmental Literacy Plan will build upon these strengths, and suggest priorities for present and future attention. It will lay out the next steps towards fulfilling on our State?s commitment to ensure all people in Wisconsin are environmentally literate.

State Superintendent Evers has formally asked the Coalition to develop the Environmental Literacy Plan for Wisconsin. A Steering Committee meets each month to draft the Plan. The Wisconsin No Child Left Inside Coalition Steering Committee is made up of representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education, Wisconsin Environmental Education Board, Wisconsin Environmental Education Foundation, Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Environmental Science Teachers Network, Milwaukee Public Schools, the Green Charter School Network, and the US EPA?s Environmental Education and Training Partnership. The broader Coalition is kept updated on progress, provides input and feedback to guide the plan development, and ultimately, will play a key role in implementing and evaluating Wisconsin?s Environmental Literacy Plan.

Wisconsin?s Environmental Literacy Plan will be compliant with the pending national No Child Left Inside (NCLI) legislation. The No Child Left Inside Act requires States develop, implement, and evaluate a State Environmental Literacy Plan in order to be eligible to receive funding associated with the Act. Currently, the bill suggests an appropriation of $100 million to support the State Environmental Literacy Plans. Spending eases up just before Christmas | Stuff.co.nz

Shoppers will hit the Boxing Day sales today but may have lost some of their zest for spending after a quieter-than-expected final countdown to Christmas.

Kiwis spent 4.1 per cent more in the first three weeks of December compared with last year, but retail payments network operator Paymark recorded a dip in pre-Christmas spending last week.

Chief executive Simon Tong says figures suggest many shoppers avoided a last-minute dash.

Wellington retailers appeared to fare worse than most in New Zealand, with spending after December 20 down 1.6 per cent.

But it was made up for in the November 30 to December 20 period, when shoppers in the capital spent $10.5 million more - especially on bubbly and carpets.

Paymark, which processes more than three-quarters of electronic transactions in retail, said last week that national spending through its network from November 30 to December 20 totalled just over $3.2 billion - almost 5 per cent more than last year.

Nationwide, people spent less on books, electronics and sporting gear, but more on clothing, eating out and whiteware.

Retailers Association chief executive John Albertson said it was hard to pinpoint why spending growth had sloped off, but it was still positive that it was tracking up 3.4 per cent year on year.

He expected a strong finish to the year for retailers, with growth sitting fairly stable at 3 to 3.5 per cent.

"It's a reasonable outcome. If you go back to August or September, a lot of the experts were predicting gloom and doom. But around that 3.4 per cent, there will be a lot of variability. Some retailers will have done more than that, others not as well."

There was also variability among regions.

Wellington's low spending probably reflected the public service shake-up, and how people in the sector were feeling about their jobs, Mr Albertson said.

Paymark said spending in Canterbury last week was up 8 per cent year on year - continuing the region's strong sales growth for the month. Spending was 2.1 per cent higher in Taranaki/Taupo and up 3.7 per cent in Hawke's Bay, year on year.

Mr Tong said the 1.9 per cent spending dropoff in Auckland and Northland, like the capital, could be because of people leaving town early for Christmas.

Greg Holland, owner of Greg Holland Jewellery in Newmarket in Auckland, noticed a slowdown in spending a few days before Christmas. That could be partly because people were travelling.

"A lot of schools finished last Thursday and I think a lot of people have chosen to get out of town. I've noticed Newmarket is not actually that busy this year in the last few days. My hunch is that foot traffic is down a bit."

Trading at his store was up year on year and had been steady throughout the year, he said.

Among other things, his firm made engagement rings and he knew some women would be in for some surprise proposals. Fairfax NZ

Snow threatens post-Christmas travel

A huge storm that dumped heavy snow and rain on the West Coast is expected to move east and could spoil travel plans for people looking to return home the day after Christmas, which is considered one of the busiest travel days.

The powerful storm that has already blanketed much of Northern California is expected to move east over the next few days and drop snow from Oklahoma starting today before finishing up in the Northeast sometime Wednesday.

The Midwest will be covered with snow by Wednesday, likely causing delays at major airports in cities including Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago just in time for post-Christmas travel, when millions of Americans will be on the move.

Snow could arrive in the Northeast by Thursday, dropping 1-3 inches over parts of New England.

In Syracuse, N.Y., plows are working overtime, dealing with two consecutive days of snow this weekend during the city's first snowstorm of the season. As the city continues to dig out, all eyes are watching the storm roll in from the west.

Torrential rain and heavy winds have also caused trouble for California's Bay Area over the weekend, which has seen severe flooding, power outages and delays for those planning to fly out for the holidays.

Ryan Damstra of Northern California spent seven hours at San Francisco's International Airport Sunday but was not able to fly.

"After I found out my flight had been canceled after four hours of waiting in the airport, I had to wait another three hour customer service line," Damstra told ABC News Radio.

More than 400 flights were canceled on Sunday at San Francisco International Airport. Travelers had to deal with more than 200 cancelations on Saturday.

So far this month San Francisco got almost five inches of rain that is almost twice as much as they get for the entire month of December.

Severe snow and rain are not the only issues facing Americans looking to get home before the New Year. Several states in the Gulf of Mexico all the way from Houston to Raleigh, N.C., are bracing for possible tornadoes starting today and lasting until Wednesday.

The biggest chance for tornadoes will be tomorrow from Houston to New Orleans to Birmingham and Atlanta.

AAA predicts 93.3 million people will travel more than 50 miles this holiday season, from Saturday through New Year's Day. That's a 1.6 percent increase from last year. Christmas is the third-busiest holiday for travelers, after Memorial Day and Thanksgiving.

AAA is urging drivers to leave earlier or later to dodge bad weather.

ABC News' Max Golembo contributed to this report.

Reindeer noses: Really red? | Health X Pert Articles-Health care ...

Ho ho ho, here's some Christmas-themed science! The British Medical Journal's Christmas issue this month features a study about reindeer that treats a fantastical idea with some medical reality. The result is a lesson in how reindeer noses compare to the noses of humans and what purpose their underlying structures serve. Can Ince, a professor who works in intensive care medicine at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, studies microcirculation, or how the smallest blood vessels in the body receive blood. Red blood cells go to these vessels to relieve themselves of oxygen, delivering it to the tissues that need it. Ince?and colleagues developed a hand microscope so that doctors can look for abnormalities and pathologies in the smallest blood vessels, even when blood pressure is normalized. This has had a great influence on intensive care medicine, Ince said. Particularly interesting to Ince was how this might apply to the nasal tract and, more generally, to ear, nose and throat diseases. "We decided to study the best known nose in the business, which was, of course, Rudolph?s nose," Ince said. The new study looked at both humans and reindeer.?Five healthy human volunteers, two adult reindeer, and a patient with a condition called nasal polyposis ?participated. The researchers saw that the patients with nasal polyposis had abnormal microvasculature, or blood vessels in their noses. To check out the reindeer noses, Ince?traveled to Tromso, Norway, where researchers there?study how reindeer and other animals adapt to their environment. It is indeed relatively near the North Pole; in fact, the University of Tromso, where one of the researchers is based, is the world's northernmost university, according to its website. These reindeer are subjected to some fairly frosty temperatures in the wild, as low as around -40 degrees F. But they still need a way to cool off vital organs. Researchers put reindeer on a treadmill to see what happens to their internal temperature when they're running. The nose of the reindeer plays an important role in regulating the animal's brain temperature, Ince?said. The nose ventilates?the brain with the blood in the microcirculation, Ince said. In the new study, researchers saw that when viewed in infrared light (with a thermal camera), reindeer noses do glow red. And in normal light, reindeer tend to have a pink coloration on their noses. "We found that Rudolph, indeed, has a red nose, but that it is completely related to his normal physiology," Ince said. The blood vessels in the reindeer appear to fill and empty in a rhythmic flow, which had never been observed before, Ince?said. He believes the images in the study are the first of nasal microcirculation in reindeer. Reindeer have more small vessels, and 25% higher density of these vessels, in their noses than humans do, the scientists said. But they seem to have similarities in terms of small structures within the nose. These structures that produce a lot of the mucus in the nose are important because they help with the humidification?of our bodies.
