The ability to reach items on high shelves and easily see through a crowd may no longer have the same appeal for some women. A study recently published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention finds a link between postmenopausal women's height and cancers.

According to the study, the taller a woman's stature is, the higher the risk of cancer at a number of different sites, including breast, colon, endometrium, kidney, ovary, rectum and thyroid. Additionally, taller women have a greater risk of developing multiple myeloma and melanoma.

All of these associations did not change after adjusting for known influencers of these cancers, such as age, weight, education, smoking habits, alcohol intake and hormone therapy. The researchers say that height even had more influence over cancer risk than a common measure of obesity, body mass index (BMI).

Researchers studied 144,701 women aged 50 to 79 who participated in the Women's Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998. After a follow-up 12 years later, in total, 20,928 cancers were identified within the group.

Results showed that for every 10-centimeter increase in height (3.94 inches), there was a 13% increase in likelihood of developing cancer.

Specifically:

  • An increase in risk of 13-17% for breast, ovary, endometrium and colon cancers, as well as for melanoma, and
  • An increase in risk of 23-29% for kidney, rectum, thyroid and blood cancers.

There were 19 cancers studied in total, none of which displayed a negative association with height.

Geoffrey Kabat - senior epidemiologist in the department of epidemiology and population health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University, New York, NY - says:

"We were surprised at the number of cancer sites that were positively associated with height. In this data set, more cancers are associated with height than were associated with body mass index.

Ultimately, cancer is a result of processes having to do with growth, so it makes sense that hormones or other growth factors that influence height may also influence cancer risk."

Various studies in the past have looked at personal characteristics in relation to cancers. For example, a recent study linked height and BMI to ovarian cancer. An interesting note made by the current researchers is that both height and BMI have been increasing by about 1 cm each decade in high-income countries, potentially increasing the risk for cancer in the process.

Few previous studies have adjusted for other known influencers of cancer when researching the effect of height.

Dr. Geoffrey Kabat makes the obvious point that, unlike other risk factors such as diet and lifestyle, height is not something we can change. He adds, however:

"Although it is not a modifiable risk factor, the association of height with a number of cancer sites suggests that exposures in early life, including nutrition, play a role in influencing a person's risk of cancer."

While the researchers found an association between cancer and height, the medical evidence shows it is a complex disease that cannot be linked purely to one factor.

Seeking the business crowd, Dunkin' Donuts rolls out new look

Dunkin' Donuts

Image provided by Dunkin' Donuts shows the new decor for its coffee shops.

Sink into a comfortable chair under soft lighting, plug in your laptop and hop onto the coffee shop?s free wi-fi network. Think you?re in Starbucks? Think again: This is the new face of Dunkin? Donuts.

For years, the chain has styled itself as the anti-Starbucks, even selling a T-shirt on its website that reads, ?Friends Don?t Let Friends Drink Starbucks.? But customers will notice some decidedly Starbucks-like elements when they step into a Dunkin? Donuts.

The bright orange and pink colors of the brand?s logo will still be present, but mellowed by brown and tan shades on the walls and floors, softer lighting and upholstered seats.

?The hottest trend in the restaurant business right now is fast casual,? said Harry Balzer, chief industry analyst at market research firm the NPD Group. The success of chains like Panera Bread and Chipotle Mexican Grill have other restaurant companies scrambling to emulate their practices.

?In specialty coffee, you want to have a third-place element [a place to hang out that's not home or work]. I do think a lot of their reimaging program plays into that idea,? said R.J. Hottovy, senior restaurant analyst at Morningstar.

Dunkin? Donuts is taking a page not just from Starbucks? playbook, but from the entire fast food market. Within the past two years, McDonald?s, Wendy?s and Burger King have all added more sophisticated, grown-up elements to their decor and the look of their restaurants.

If the results of the big burger chains are any indication, the overhaul could be a good investment for franchisees. Their brand image will probably get an initial bump. According to market YouGov BrandIndex market research, all three burger chains registered better consumer impressions after debuting new looks for their restaurants, although the lift was temporary for all three.

McDonald?s says introducing its new design gives stores in the U.S. a 6 percent incremental sales lift, and Wendy?s said made-over stores generate 20 percent higher sales.

With its makeover, Dunkin? is trying to break out of the breakfast category it traditionally has been associated with and get customers to think of it as an all-day destination. ?The modernized design incorporates many new features to create a warm environment for guests who seek a longer, more relaxed visit to Dunkin? Donuts as part of their day,? the company said in a release.

?People are eating and drinking around the clock now and working wherever they have to,? said Todd Hooper, retail strategist at consulting firm Kurt Salmon. Fast food and coffee shops are shifting, he said, ?going from just a kitchen to being an out-of-home den or office or conference room.?

Kathy Hayden, foodservice analyst at Mintel, said Dunkin? Donuts also is positioning itself to capitalize on two workplace trends: As more people telecommute, they?re looking for places where they can get out of the house and still get work done. And a more mobile work force means more demand for places that can serve as ersatz locations for business meetings.

?Offering wi-fi is not enough. You need to have a welcoming atmosphere,? she said.

Adding traditional coffeehouse touches shouldn?t detract from Dunkin?s brand image in customers? minds, Hooper said. ?I think you can still be an anti-Starbucks person but sit in a comfy chair.?

US senator calls for military strikes on Syria

?

Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.)

A prominent U.S. senator has called on the administration of President Barack Obama to attack Syrian ?airfields, airplanes and massed artillery.?

The influential chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Carl Levin (D-Mich.) who has returned from a fact-finding trip to the Middle East, also expressed support for arming the militant groups fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

?Increased military pressure on Assad is the only way to achieve a negotiated settlement in Syria, which in turn is needed to restore stability to a region that certainly doesn?t need any more instability,? Levin said Wednesday during a speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Levin conceded that the U.S. public opposes an increased involvement in the Syrian conflict and that there is ?no consensus? on the issue on Capitol Hill.

Senator Levin and Senator Angus King (I-Maine) spent five days in Jordan and Turkey, talking to government officials as well as U.S. diplomatic and military personnel about the conflict in Syria.

The two senators also met with militant leaders including Salim Idriss, the leader of the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA), and visited refugee camps along the Syrian border.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, Levin and King said the U.S. and its allies should arm and train the militants and consider ?options for limited, targeted strikes at airplanes, helicopters, missiles, tanks and artillery.?

However they said they were not calling for American troops on the ground in Syria.

The senators noted that ?doing nothing may be the worst option of all,? potentially destabilizing U.S. allies in the region, including Turkey and Jordan, and threatening Israeli interests.

In a letter last month, Sen. Levin, Sen. John McCain, a Republican from Arizona and Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey called on President Obama to take ?more decisive military actions? against Syria.

A recent opinion poll conducted by the Pew Research Center shows that the majority of Americans, 70 percent, are against U.S. involvement in Syria?s unrest.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have wedding "breakthrough": Will wed in California in December

Jennifer Aniston and Louis Theroux's wedding has been the subject of months of media scrutiny as everyone waited for the moment when the lovebirds would finally tie the knot.

Despite getting engaged in August of last year the happy couple have been forced to delay their wedding day various times.

It was originally thought that they would marry in the spring this year but work commitments and location choice have caused a halt on the proceedings.

A source close to 41-year-old Justin said that "the main source of uncertainty has been removed."

The source told The MailOnline: "Jen and Justin have gone back and forth on where to marry and whether to have a destination wedding so many times.

"Jen has always made it clear LA was her first choice and Justin has compromised and agreed to marry in California.

"Justin's reservations with LA are well known and he wanted to marry on the East Coast where his friends and much of his family is based, where he proposed to Jen and where he feels most comfortable."

This conflict over East versus West coast has extended beyond their wedding location, it is also an issue over where they'll live as a married couple.

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux

And the source added: "Contrary to popular opinion Jen does not hate New York- she studied there growing up but it's now become too intense for her.

"She has made it clear how much it would mean to her to get married near where they now live and where she is happiest and feels most settled.

"They won't wed at their recently renovated Bel Air mansion but will likely use their home to host an intimate reception."

Justin has apparently come around to his 44-year-old fianc?e?s desire to get hitched in Hollywood.

One of the biggest blocks to their wedding has also been their hectic work schedules, with Justin landing a lead role in the new HBO series The Leftovers.

This had reportedly led Jen to have some doubts over his commitment.

The insider said: "In the past fortnight, Justin has worked hard on convincing Jen that he really is committed to marrying and that the delay has largely arisen as a result of his career really taking off in the last six months as well as her inability to decide exactly the wedding she wants to have."

With wedding plans now in "overdrive", they are "moving forward and hope to be married by the end of the year."

Chantal to Reach Bahamas, Florida Waters by This Weekend

State College, Pa. -- 10 July 2013-- AccuWeather.com reports Chantal, or its ghost will cruise the Bahamas and waters just east of Florida by this weekend with rough surf, building seas, torrential downpours and gusty squalls.

After bringing the potential for flooding rain and mudslides to portions of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico at midweek, AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center meteorologists expect Chantal to turn more to the northwest late this week and weekend.

Chantal was struggling to survive as it approached Hispaniola Wednesday, but a zone of showers and gusty squalls associated with the system is expected to move north of the island and its rugged mountains later this week.

Travel, beach and boating interests in the Turks and Caicos Islands, The Bahamas and the southeastern coast of United States should continue to monitor the progress of Chantal.

While Chantal is forecast to spend much of its life as a tropical storm to perhaps a Category 1 hurricane, rough surf and building seas will affect the islands in the region and beaches from the Florida East Coast to areas as far north as the Carolinas into this weekend.

The exact track and intensity of Chantal beyond the Bahamas is a bit uncertain at this time with possibilities ranging from the system dissolving to regaining strength after crossing Hispaniola.

Even if Chantal fails to recover from the venture around the high mountains of Hispaniola Wednesday into Thursday, a zone of torrential downpours and locally strong thunderstorms would be strewn over the region, due to a persistent flow of tropical moisture from the Caribbean.

The moisture alone brings the potential for flash and urban flooding to Florida to the southeastern part of the mainland United States.

While steering winds will be weak around the southeastern U.S. into early next week, a general drift of the system and its moisture toward the northwest is most likely. Chantal or a remnant thereof could drift toward the U.S. as a result.

The tropical moisture, with or without Chantal, is likely to linger from the Carolinas to Georgia and Florida next week in the form of downpours, locally strong thunderstorms and a risk of localized flooding.

Venezuela is 'most likely' asylum option for Edward Snowden, leak journalist says

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who broke the NSA surveillance story, says Venezuela is likely Edward Snowden's choice for asylum, but Snowden will not have an easy time traveling without a passport and with the possibility of being caught by U.S. police or Interpol. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

Venezuela is the "most likely" asylum choice for former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, the journalist who published the contents of the self-declared leaker?s classified documents said Tuesday.

In an interview with Reuters shortly after speaking to Snowden by online chat on Tuesday, Glenn Greenwald said that Venezuela - one of three Latin American countries that have offered Snowden asylum - is the one most likely to guarantee his safety.

Nicaragua and Bolivia have also said they would accept Snowden but Venezuela is better poised "to get him safely from Moscow to Latin America and to protect him once he's there," Greenwald told Reuters. "They're a bigger country, a stronger country and a richer country with more leverage in international affairs."

It's believed NSA leaker Edward Snowden is holed up inside this hotel at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.???

Snowden, 30, is believed to be holed up in the transit zone of Moscow?s Sheremetyevo Airport from where he has applied for asylum in more than 20 countries in a bid to avoid extradition to the U.S.

Even if Snowden agrees an asylum deal with Venezuela, travel problems could take time to resolve: His U.S. passport has been canceled and U.S. allies may deny airspace to any flight on which he is believed to be traveling.

Greenwald, a blogger and columnist for the U.K.?s Guardian newspaper, told Reuters he based his opinion on an "informed guess" after recent contacts with Snowden.

He later clarified on Twitter that he had ?no idea? where Snowden would actually go next, and that he was merely stating that Venezuela ?seemed most likely able? to arrange the whistle-blower?s safe passage from Moscow.

Greenwald added that a resolution to Snowden?s situation could take "days or hours or weeks."

He was speaking from his home in Rio de Janeiro, having returned there from Hong Kong where he worked alongside Snowden, publishing reports that disclosed the vast scale of surveillance conducted by the National Security Agency on the telephone records of U.S. citizens.

Greenwald told Reuters that Snowden had Internet access in the airport transit zone ? a diplomatic no man?s land -- and had been able to communicate with those seeking to help him.

He said Snowden's task was "figuring out how to get to the country that has offered him asylum" without coming within reach of the U.S., which characterized as "the rogue, lawless empire that has proven itself willing to engage in rogue behavior to prevent him physically from getting there."

Venezuela confirmed Monday it had received Snowden?s asylum request, but had no more information on whether a deal had been reached.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said Tuesday night that Snowden had yet to accept his country's offer of asylum. He added that if Snowden did make it to Venezuela, he would not be extradited to the United States.?

The?paucity of asylum offers?has led to speculation?Snowden might seek to remain in Russia, creating a diplomatic headache for President Vladimir Putin who has already made clear he wants the leaker to move elsewhere.

Writing in Foreign Policy, Dmitri Trenin suggested Snowden?s move to Moscow may have been a Russian attempt to snub the U.S. that had backfired.

Where does the Snowden case leave us with respect to U.S.-Russian relations? Those Russian officials who were evidently involved in organizing Snowden's passage from Hong Kong to Latin America via Sheremetyevo probably sought to capitalize on the U.S. government's embarrassment in compensation for the recently increased U.S. and European criticism of the Kremlin's policies. The plan, however, went awry. By the time he reached Sheremetyevo, Snowden's U.S. passport had been revoked, and no promised travel documents from Ecuador had arrived. Russia, which had been meant to be a mere conduit in the operation, suddenly became Snowden's temporary home.

However, Steve Vladeck, professor of law at the American University Washington College of Law, said he thought the chances of Snowden being extradited to the United States were ?basically going down by the day.?

He said it appeared unlikely the Russians would turn Snowden over and ?if he?s able to successfully make it to a country like Venezuela ? I think it?s very unlikely that he ever ends up in a U.S. courtroom.?

Vladeck said extradition was less about the law than international relations.

?The dirty little secret of U.S. extradition law is that 95 percent of it is political and really only 5 percent of it is law so the options that are on the table at this point are primarily diplomatic,? he said.

?At the end of the day, no matter what the law is, there are so many ways to avoid extradition or facilitate extradition that the politics, what is most in the interest of the country at issue is really going to have a lot more to say about the end-game than anything that?s written in an extradition treaty,? he added.

Greenwald also told Reuters he is working through the remainder of Snowden?s leaked documents and plans to write more stories in the coming months.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Placebo effect largely ignored in psychological intervention studies

Placebo effect largely ignored in psychological intervention studies [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 9-Jul-2013

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. Many brain-training companies tout the scientific backing of their products the laboratory studies that reveal how their programs improve your brainpower. But according to a new report, most intervention studies like these have a critical flaw: They do not adequately account for the placebo effect.

The new analysis appears in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

The results of psychological interventions, like medical ones, must be compared to improvements in a control condition, said University of Illinois psychology professor Daniel Simons, who co-wrote the article with Walter Boot, Cary Stothart and Cassie Stutts, of Florida State University. In a clinical trial for a new drug, some participants receive a pill with the critical ingredients, and others receive an identical-looking pill that is inert a placebo. Because participants cannot tell which they received, people in each condition should be equally likely to expect improvements.

In contrast, for most psychology interventions, participants know what's in their "pill," Simons said.

"It's not possible to use a brain-training program for 10 hours without knowing the type of training you received," he said. "People can form expectations for what will improve based on their experiences with the training tasks, and the existence of differences in expectations between people in treatment and control groups potentially undermines any claim that improvements were due to the treatment itself. Not one of the studies cited by the brain-training companies looks at differing expectations between the groups."

Merely having an "active control group," one that does something for the same amount of time as the treatment group, does not protect against the placebo effect, Simons said. A treatment group that completes an intensive memory-training regimen might expect improved performance on other cognitive tasks assessing memory. A control group that does crossword puzzles or watches DVDs for the same amount of time likely won't expect the same amount of improvement on the same tasks, he said.

"These problems are not limited to brain-training studies," Simons said. "They hold true for almost all intervention studies."

To illustrate the pervasiveness of this problem, the researchers examined expectations for improvement in studies of the effect of playing action video games on measures of perception and attention.

"Such studies find greater improvements in performance on attention and perception tasks after training with action video games than after training with non-action games for the same amount of time," Boot said. "However, even with this sort of active control condition, these interventions still are at risk for differential placebo effects."

The researchers measured expectations in two survey studies involving 200 participants each. Participants watched either a short video of an action game ("Unreal Tournament") or one of the games commonly used as controls in these studies ("Tetris" or "The Sims"). They then read descriptions of the cognitive tests used in the studies, watched short videos of the tests, and answered questions about whether they thought their performance on the tests would improve as a result of training on the video game they had viewed.

The results showed that expectations for improvement were greater for the action-game group than for the control games on exactly the same tests that showed bigger improvements for action-game training in the intervention studies. In fact, the pattern of expected improvements exactly matched actual improvements seen in video game intervention studies, the researchers found.

"If expectations for improvement align perfectly with the actual improvements, then any claim that the treatment was effective is premature," Simons said. "Researchers must first eliminate differences in expectations across conditions."

"Even though participants in psychology interventions typically know the nature of their intervention you can't play a video game without knowing the game you're playing there are steps researchers can take to ensure that the advantages of the treatment group are not due to expectations," Boot said.

For example, researchers can mislead participants as to the expected benefits of a particular intervention, giving those in the control group higher expectations for improvement than those in the treatment group. Researchers also can assess expectations generated by treatments in a separate sample of participants to ensure that expectations do not differ between intervention and control treatments.

"Although placebo effects can be helpful as well, we need to know what causes improvements in an intervention," Simons said. "We don't want to recommend new therapies, change school curricula, or encourage the elderly to buy brain-training games if the benefits are just due to expectations for improvement. Only by using better active controls that equate for expectations can we draw definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of any intervention."

The 20 best NBA free agents still on the market

NBA free agents can?t officially sign until the July moratorium ends on Wednesday, but the market has already been picked over by preliminary negotiation. Such is the influence of the league?s handshake agreements, which have taken coveted stars and role players off the table and left those teams with cap space and exceptions to sort through the sparse remains of the free-agent pool. Below are the best of that remaining crop ? the top 20 available free agents across all positions, each of whom could contribute on a winning team.

1. Andrew Bynum

Some team is guaranteed to take a chance on the 25-year-old Bynum, even after he spent last year racking up knee surgeries and making questionable decisions at every turn. Such is the value of Bynum?s uncommon package of size and talent; there simply aren?t many players capable of producing like a healthy Bynum can, and thus his free agency holds the potential for a team to acquire a high-level player at what could be a sizable discount.

Still, given the length of Bynum?s absence from the court and his reluctance to work out for interested teams, he remains a precarious and presumptive leader on this list. We may ultimately find out that Bynum isn?t the player he once was, but for now we?ll work under the assumption that he?d be able to more or less pick up where he left off when healthy, making him both an incredible value and an incredible risk. So far, the Cavaliers, Hawks and Mavericks reportedly seem most willing to take that gamble. Cleveland has gone so far as to put a two-year, $24 million offer on the table, according to Yahoo! Sports. Bynum is set to meet with Atlanta officials on Tuesday, though reports differ on whether he is expected to then make his decision or go on to meet with Dallas.

2. Jeff Teague (restricted)

Though his game isn?t yet exceptional, Teague boasts the kind of all-around profile that makes him a fascinating breakout candidate. His years under former Atlanta coach Larry Drew seemed shackled. Even when given relative freedom to run the Hawks? offense, Teague was never fully unleashed as the drive-and-kick dynamo many hoped he could someday become. Still, last season he posted career highs in scoring (14.6 points) and assists (7.2), while Atlanta?s offense hummed at what was essentially a top-10 level with him on the floor.

He?s certainly quick enough to break down defenses off the dribble and a good enough shooter to complicate an opponent?s coverage. All Teague needs is time in the right role within the right offense. Teague is only 25 and primed to make the most of an expanded opportunity.

3. Nikola Pekovic (restricted)

Pekovic?s hulking frame and power game give him a throwback appeal, but a surprising mobility makes him fit to operate in modern offensive and defensive systems. He?s the inside counterpoint that so many perimeter-oriented rosters are missing, or in the case of the incumbent Timberwolves, a cooperative foil for All-Star big man Kevin Love.

When even remotely healthy, Minnesota was an effective defensive team with Pekovic taking up space in the paint and sliding into favorable position. He won?t resemble a standout NBA athlete even on his spriest day, but Pekovic does good work in repelling pick-and-roll action and pushing opponents out of the post.

On offense, Pekovic understands what he does best and rarely strays from the basics. Even without much above-the-rim potential, his strength and footwork allow him the angles and room necessary to finish in traffic, both as a post-up threat and a surprising roll option. He isn?t likely to make any leaps in production at this point (coming off his first NBA contract, Pekovic is already 27), but most every team could find use for a big man with real defensive chops and a bruising interior game.

4. Brandon Jennings (restricted)

If Jennings is to draw a huge offer in free agency, it will undoubtedly be predicated on some team?s belief that it can better harness the 23-year-old?s misguided game. There are certainly things to like about Jennings ? namely the notion of him as a confident, charismatic source of both scoring and playmaking. He?s put up the raw numbers (17.5 points and 6.5 assists last season) to justify that expectation, but the way in which Jennings reached those marks provides plenty of reason for concern. At the moment, he?s an undiscerning gunner, capable of accomplishing much with the ball in his hands but unable to read situations well enough to understand when he should shoot and when he should pass. To his credit, he did hit 37.5 percent of his 5.8 three-point attempts last season, making his?jumper-happy game more palatable than it otherwise could be.

Defensively, Jennings has betrayed every bit of the promise he showed early in his career. He legitimately helped the Bucks guard at a top-five level in his first two seasons. Since then, his coverage has grown increasingly less focused. According to Synergy Sports Technology, Jennings rated miserably in defending both isolation sequences and spot-up opportunities last season ? a basic indicator that he?s become a liability both on and off the ball. Quickness alone just can?t save a defender who takes such an open stance (thus surrendering easy blow-bys) in coverage and gets caught ball-watching on a frequent basis. Teams should be given pause by the fact that three years and change under Scott Skiles has done so little for Jennings? defensive fundamentals.

5. Andrei Kirilenko

It?s a bit surprising that Kirilenko is a free agent at all, but the 32-year-old forward declined a $10.2 million player option in order to see what the market could offer. Power to him, and power to the number of teams that could benefit from his two-way contributions.

Kirilenko isn?t the high-volume scorer that his pay grade might suggest, but he?s so splendid in so many other phases of the game that it hardly matters. He?s no longer an All-NBA defender, but he?s not far off; Kirilenko remains one of the most versatile defensive assets in the league, as he can cover the top forwards at either position while also providing impeccable help D. He?s a solid rebounder, too, particularly when slotted at small forward, and works so tirelessly that Minnesota coach Rick Adelman had to tell Kirilenko not to dive for so many loose balls when the Wolves were in the midst of an injury rush. He?s the kind of high-caliber competitor every team should want.

On top of all that he provides defensively, Kirilenko is an expert cutter, having combined a natural feel for the game with years in Jerry Sloan?s flex offense. Kirilenko understands which defensive actions can be exploited with a quick dash to the rim or a bit of misdirection, and he does a fantastic job of making himself open and available on those cuts. Kirilenko is no slouch when creating for himself, either, as his consistent movement allows him to catch the ball and quickly drive against a stilted defense. From there, Kirilenko is a solid finisher and clever passer, cementing his value as an all-around complement.

He?s certainly better suited for some systems than others, and a shaky enough shooter to make for a poor fit in some spots. But on the right team, Kirilenko could prove to be an incredible asset, likely on a short-term deal as his career winds down.

6. Gerald Henderson (restricted)

Aside from his gravity-defying throwdown early in the season, Henderson had a quiet year in a starting role for one of the worst teams in basketball. That?s not a great way to build a r?sum?, but Henderson?s performance has been sturdy enough to wonder what he might be capable of in a different context.

The Bobcats were such a mess that it?s difficult to evaluate Henderson?s defensive value within the team concept. The effort was clearly there, but Charlotte?s defenders were so rarely on the same page that it?s hard to know if Henderson was really executing as intended. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old has shown nice defensive potential over the past few seasons, and according to Synergy Sports, Henderson allowed just 0.66 points per play (and 32.3 percent shooting) in isolation situations last season. He?s clearly reliable enough to stay in front of most perimeter threats, and Henderson should do well if empowered by the fundamentals and principles of a more consistent defense.

Offensively, Henderson is skilled overall but doesn?t have any sort of specialty. He has dabbled in pick-and-roll play, does rather well in the post and has improved as a spot-up shooter. He still needs to become a more consistent threat from beyond the arc, but he?s progressively attempted more threes in every season and made a big step toward league-average marksmanship last season by shooting 33 percent. All in all, Henderson?s game seems safe and malleable enough to warrant considerable interest, provided that a team is willing to pay to sign him through restricted free agency.

Monta Ellis shot just 28.7 percent from long-range last season.

7. Monta Ellis

I?ve already written at length about the problems with building around the 27-year-old Ellis, but it basically boils down to this: He?s too limited a long-range shooter (28.7 percent on threes last season), too worrisome a defender and too poor a decision-maker to be a first-option ball handler. His package of strengths and weaknesses make him almost impossible to build around effectively, barring some development that pushes Ellis into an ideal role as a high-value super-sub.

8. Elton Brand

Dallas had to play it safe with the 34-year-old Brand?s minutes (21.2 per game) last season, and as a result the savvy, ground-bound big man carved out another solid campaign in relative silence. His per-game numbers (7.2 points, six rebounds, 1.3 blocks) don?t jump off the stat sheet, but in limited run he proved to be a valuable contributor.

Brand couldn?t save a Dallas defense that allowed so many perimeter blow-bys or salvage the rebounding efforts of a team that struggled so profoundly on the glass. He could, however, prove to?be an outstanding addition to a roster with better support. He?s a perfect fit for teams looking for another big man to help close the gap in execution between starters and reserves, particularly in their defensive rotations. What Brand lacks in lateral speed he makes up for with spatial awareness and economy of movement, making him a viable help defender when part of a sound system.?He?s strong enough to battle for post and rebounding position on a consistent basis, and he has the discipline to make opponents work for their points.

He can?t play starter?s minutes because of his age and diminished offense. Still, Brand might make sense for teams looking to fill out their big-man rotation with the best defenders possible.

9. Chris Andersen

Most every player on this list is context-dependent, but perhaps none more so than the 35-year-old Andersen. On the right team, his ability to finish ? with dunks, reverse layups and even the occasional finger roll ? is an incredible asset. He played brilliantly off of LeBron James in Miami, but the tenets of their relationship could easily be exported to another team with an effective playmaker.?Things may not be quite as easy without James and the Heat?s impeccable spacing, but any player who can get to the rim consistently can still set up Andersen as he stalks around the baseline, or use his talents as the primary big man in pick-and-roll scenarios.

Without that kind of enabling passer, though, the most attractive qualities of Andersen?s game would be bottled up and rendered inaccessible. He would be reduced to a source of hustle defense and offensive rebounds, and while those contributions might be valuable in their own right, such a scenario would leave Andersen as significantly less valuable compared to what he can offer a team like Miami.?It seems unlikely that Andersen would bail on Miami at this point, but if the money is good enough, he might be enticed.

10. Brandan Wright

Because of injury, recovery and what often amounted to a minor role with the Mavericks, the 25-year-old Wright has played roughly the same number of NBA minutes as Kenneth Faried, Larry Sanders, and Nikola Vucevic, with the prime of his career still to come. He was drafted in 2007, but all of the above factors make him functionally quite raw by NBA standards, and theoretically interesting to any team in need of an energetic big man to round out its rotation.

Wright is an odd player in that he thrives on an array of runners and floaters, but Dallas had some success focusing his athletic gifts in the pick-and-roll. In the right context (read: with the right playmaker), Wright could be even more effective and potentially prove to be a starting-level contributor as he gets more experience. For now, he?s an effective finisher, a source of instant energy and a bouncy, quick-footed asset on defense. Nothing in his game suggests star potential, but Wright is already the kind of role player who creates value (via rolling to the rim, spacing the floor a bit, etc.) beyond his individual production.

Questions over Asiana plane's auto speed controls

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) ? Investigators are trying to understand whether automated cockpit equipment Asiana flight 214's pilots say they were relying on to control the airliner's speed may have contributed to the plane's dangerously low and slow approach just before it crashed.

New details in the accident investigation that were revealed Tuesday by National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman were not conclusive about the cause of Saturday's crash, but they raised potential areas of focus: Was there a mistake made in setting the automatic speed control, did it malfunction or were the pilots not fully aware of what the plane was doing?

One of the most puzzling aspects of the crash has been why the wide-body Boeing 777 jet came in far too low and slow, clipping its landing gear and then its tail on a rocky seawall just short the runway. The crash killed two of the 307 people and injured scores of others, most not seriously.

Among those injured were two flight attendants in the back of the plane, who survived despite being thrown onto the runway when the plane slammed into the seawall and the tail broke off.

The autothrottle was set for 157 mph and the pilots assumed it was controlling the plane's airspeed, Hersman said. However, the autothrottle was only "armed" or ready for activation, she said.

Hersman said the pilot at the controls, identified by Korean authorities as Lee Gang-guk, was only about halfway through his training on the Boeing 777 and it was his first time landing that type of aircraft at the San Francisco airport. And the co-pilot, identified as Lee Jeong-Min, was on his first trip as a flight instructor.

In the 777, turning the autothrottle on is a two-step process ? first it is armed, then it is engaged, Boeing pilots said. Hersman didn't say whether the Asiana's autothrottle was engaged.

Bob Coffman, an American Airlines captain who has flown 777s, said the only way he could think of for Asiana plane to slow as quickly at the NTSB has described would be if somehow the autothrottle has shifted into the idle mode.

"There is no way to get from a normal airspeed and normal position at 500 feet to an abnormally slow airspeed at 300 feet unless there wasn't enough thrust either deliberately or inadvertently," he said.

Only moments before the crash did the training captain realize the autothrottle wasn't controlling the plane's speed, Hersman said.

"This is one of the two hallmarks of complexity and challenge in the industry right now," said Doug Moss, an Airbus A320 a pilot for a major U.S. airline and an aviation safety consultant in Torrance, Calif. "It's automation confusion because from what Deborah Hersman said, it appears very likely the pilots were confused as to what autothrottle and pitch mode the airplane was in. It's very likely they believed the autothrottles were on when in fact they were only armed."

Their last second efforts to rev the plane back up and abort the landing failed, although numerous survivors report hearing the engines roar just before impact.

"We just seemed to be flying in way too low. Last couple seconds before it happened the engines really revved into high gear. Just waaah! Like the captain was saying 'oh no, we gotta get out of here.' And then, boom! The back end just lifted up, just really jolted everybody in their seats," said crash survivor Elliot Stone, who owns a martial arts studio in Scotts Valley.

While in the U.S., drug and alcohol tests are standard procedure after air accidents, this is not required for foreign pilots and Hersman said the Asiana pilots had not undergone any testing.

A final determination on the cause of the crash is months away, and Hersman cautioned against drawing any conclusions based on the information revealed so far:

Seven seconds before impact, someone in the cockpit asked for more speed after apparently noticing that the jet was flying far slower than its recommended landing speed. A few seconds later, the yoke began to vibrate violently, an automatic warning telling the pilot the plane is losing lift and in imminent danger of an aerodynamic stall. One and a half seconds before impact came a command to abort the landing.

There's been no indication, from verbal calls or mechanical issues, that an emergency was ever declared by pilots. Most airlines would require all four pilots to be present for the landing, the time when something is most likely to go wrong, experienced pilots said. In addition to the two pilots, a third was "monitoring" the landing from a jumpseat, while a fourth was in the rear of the cabin.

"If there are four pilots there, even if you are sitting on a jump seat, that's something you watch ? the airspeed and the descent profile," said John Cox, a former US Airways pilot and former Air Line Pilots Association accident investigator.

The Air Line Pilots Association, the world's largest pilots union, criticized Hersman for fueling speculation that the crash is the result of pilot error before all the facts have been determined.

"The NTSB's release of incomplete, out-of-context information has fueled rampant speculation about the cause of the accident," the union said in a statement Tuesday. "The field phase of the investigation is barely three days old, and the pilots on the flight deck, at the controls of the aircraft, had little opportunity to provide vital information as to what exactly happened during the event before disclosing data recorded during the last moments of the flight. "

Hersman said the board was following its usual pattern of trying to be transparent by releasing information as it is known.

By Tuesday afternoon, NTSB interviews with three pilots were complete and the fourth was underway.

In addition, authorities were reviewing the initial rescue efforts after fire officials acknowledged that one of their trucks might have run over one of the two Chinese teenagers killed in the crash. The students, Wang Linjia and Ye Mengyuan, were part of a larger group headed for a Christian summer camp with dozens of classmates.

Asiana President Yoon Young-doo arrived in San Francisco from South Korea on Tuesday morning, fighting his way through a pack of journalists outside customs.

He met with and apologized to injured passengers, family members and survivors. But Yoon said he can't meet with the Asiana pilots because no outside contact with them is allowed until the investigation is completed.

More than 180 people aboard the plane went to hospitals with injuries. But remarkably, more than a third didn't even require hospitalization.

The passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Canadians, three Indians, one Japanese, one Vietnamese and one person from France.

South Korea officials said 39 people remained hospitalized in seven different hospitals in San Francisco.

The flight originated in Shanghai, China, and stopped over in Seoul, South Korea, before making the nearly 11-hour trip to San Francisco.

Download 2013: metal, mayhem? and good old British rain ...

Download is one of the UK?s biggest and most hallowed music festivals and has been running almost yearly since 2003. It attracts many bands: classic rock gods, new exciting hardcore and alternative outfits and of course the most metal of monsters. Thousands of fans from across the world come together every year to revel in a humongous weekend of music, mosh pits and on occasion, muddy wellies.

2013 was no exception: with masked nu-metallers Slipknot, heavy metal giants Iron Maiden and the wonderfully bizarre industrial metal group Rammstein at the headlining helm, tickets sold quickly and everybody readied their tents and band t-shirts in heavy anticipation of a great weekend. With a crowd of 90,000 and 152 bands performing, it really was a colossal festival, full of things to do and see.

The bands, as expected, put on amazing shows and were the biggest aspect of this reviewer?s weekend. However, every festival goer will know that the experience is made up of more than the music. This lifestyle review will focus on Download itself as a festival and all the highs and the few lows involved with the other aspects of festival life, such as food, facilities, shopping and atmosphere.

Camping

DOWNLOAD

Chilling out and playing cards in the tent to avoid the rain

Finding space and putting up the tents was fairly miserable because we were caught in a heavy downpour for about an hour, however after this everything went smoothly. Having a tent with a porch was very useful for muddy gear (it did rain occasionally over the weekend) and a four-man was nicely spacious, though a two-man would have done the job almost as well. It?s difficult to get all your friends in the same spot, so although a group of us were in White camp we also met up with people camping in Blue and Brown.

The colour system was fairly useful, the only issue was that occasionally the signs were not completely clear. However there was a good staff presence, for example an information booth in our camping area, so all queries could be answered. We didn?t have any trouble from those camping around us, except for some rowdy drunken sing-a-longs in the early hours that were more amusing than annoying, and everybody respected one another?s space. Also, camping right next to a food stand was a good idea, not just for hunger pangs, but also as a way to find our tents.

Food & Drink

Image3

Drinking ?1 tea at Tea and Toast

As to be expected from a festival, the food was pricey but included a good variety to suit most tastes. Fast food stands were the easiest to find and some, for example Gourmet Burger, were (relatively) cheap. I remember seeing at least five doughnut stands, all very tempting! Some catered solely to vegetarians and vegans and many others had suitable options. Some of the more unusual options included a very popular ostrich burger stand and Strumpets with Crumpets, which offered hot drinks and delicious cakes and was staffed by ladies in burlesque get-up. Tea and Toast had ?1 tea and the most divine eggy bread and toasties.

Water and other bottled drinks were ?2 on average, but could be found cheaper. Alcohol was costly; the main provider was Tubourg, but Iron Maiden?s new lager Trooper was also on offer for ?5 a bottle with a coaster and cup thrown in. I managed to avoid spending lots of money by bringing food. We had two very tasty barbeque lunches on Friday and Saturday that kept us going all day. Also, there was a good supermarket and smaller shops that provided bits and pieces.

Facilities

As Download put it on their website, ?there will be toilets, showers and water available to all, but that?s pretty much it.? There were a fair amount of portaloos, but once or twice queues meant a half hour wait. The best time for toilet cleanliness is during mid-morning, but late at night is definitely best for the lack of queues, although don?t leave it until the early hours, they?re usually disgusting by then. The water stands were useful for filling up bottles and brushing teeth. I didn?t actually spot any showering facilities but I survived nicely on baby wipes and dry shampoo without having to queue ages for a shower. Another useful facility was the phone charging booths. I used one that cost ?5 for one hour and ?8 for two hours which was expensive but there?s nothing so reassuring as a charged phone. Although I recommend bringing in a spare phone or battery. There were also lockers available for valuables that had charging options, though I just kept necessary valuables with me and had no trouble.

Shopping

Image2

Proudly sporting my new hat

First and foremost, official merchandise was in hot demand. I got a Download t-shirt for ?20 and, after deliberating over two t-shirt designs, a great Queens of the Stone Age hoodie for ?45. The official stuff is expensive but in my opinion worth it as a reminder of the festival experience.?The village, located between the campsite and arena, had a decent assortment of shops and some bargains to boot if you had a good rummage around. A lot of clothes sellers had similar items, for example novelty hats, printed leggings, band t-shirts, humour t-shirts, face paints, piercings, jewellery, cheap sunglasses and fancy dress. Most prices were similar but shopping around could lead to finding a good offer. I spotted a rack of colourful ponchos, military gear, a lot of spiked helmets, and in one place a spiky bra!

Some of the brands on sale included Iron Fist, Distubia, Hell Bunny and Voodoo Vixen; Impericon had their own stand, but unfortunately Drop Dead were not selling this year. Festival clothing isn?t always the best value, but if you are looking for particular brands having a browse on the Internet beforehand can be useful. Also, I got a lovely skirt for ?5 from a bargain rack and a hat for ?1, very happy with those finds!

Layout

The layout of Download does take some getting used to, particularly after camping only five minutes away from the arena at Sonisphere 2011. Between the campsite areas and music arena is the village, an area dedicated to food vans and shops, and also the Donnington park racetrack. The average walker will get to the arena within 20-30 minutes via the racetrack, so planning when to leave in order to watch a band is vitally important. On the first day it felt a bit daunting, the sheer size of a festival being made up of over 90,000 people, but soon enough even I, having a terrible sense of direction, was confident with finding my way. There were security people, signs, maps and information booths on hand for any problems, and also sometimes following the crowd proved useful. There was a fair amount of slow zombie style walking between bands and especially when getting back to camp at the end of the night, but this is par for the course with giant festivals.

Atmosphere

A few people might still be surprised to hear this but metal-heads are, on the whole, very friendly people and this was reflected in Download 2013?s welcoming atmosphere. I experienced no hassle, not even in the biggest crowds whilst on my own, and even in mosh pits people would look after each other. The festival community do so, no matter who?s involved, because they want everybody to share a good experience. Wherever the eye roamed I could see people with face paint, vibrant hair, masks and wacky costumes having fun, lazing on the grass or going crazy for their favourite bands.

Image5

Download was a blast. Just look at this happy camper!

The festival atmosphere is often described as magical, and this reviewer?s experience is no exception. As well as the music, the camaraderie and buzzing excitement in the air really made Download 2013 worth attending. Of course, there will always be people who don?t mind ruining somebody else?s time, for example, there were more than a few bottles flying around at high speeds during the 45 minute wait before Rammstein came on and I was hit a few times by crowd surfers (though some people need to crowd surf out for health reasons) but these people are everywhere in life and the small risks were well worth taking for an otherwise excellent weekend.

So there you have it, if you want a fun, friendly festival experience whilst enjoying the music look no further than Download.
