Israel's Barak, architect of Iran policy, quitting politics

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Monday he was quitting politics, a surprise decision that deepens uncertainty over how Israel will confront Iran's nuclear program.

Barak's political fortunes appeared to be on the rise after Israel's eight-day Gaza offensive ended in a truce, but polls predicted his centrist party, a junior partner in right-winger Benjamin Netanyahu's government, would win no more than four seats in Israel's 120-member parliament in a January 22 election.

A former head of the center-left Labour Party, Barak has insisted he and Netanyahu have been united on policy toward Iran, an issue that has often put the prime minister at odds with U.S. President Barack Obama.

But as the only centrist member of the governing coalition of right-wing and pro-settler parties, Barak has frequently visited Washington for talks with top U.S. officials and had criticized Netanyahu for airing differences with the United States.

At a hastily-called news conference, he said he would not be a candidate in the national ballot that Netanyahu's Likud party is forecast to win.

He said he would remain in his post until a new government was formed in about three months' time, signaling his decision would have no immediate effect on Israel's calculations on how best to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"The Iranian issue remains very important, even after I leave my position in three months. It will remain a central issue on the agenda," said Barak, who was often seen as a moderating force in considering possible military action against Iran.

The 70-year-old ex-general said he wanted to spend more time with his family. Politics, he said, "has never been a particular passion of mine, and I feel there is room to allow other people to serve in senior roles in Israel".

Barak said he would be prepared to offer advice to the next prime minister, if asked, remarks that swiftly raised questions in Israel over whether he might consider serving in the next government as a political appointee.

"As long as my advice is asked for and held in high regard, I will make it available to the prime minister and to the heads of the establishment, on any defense or diplomatic issue," he said.

Barak has been defense minister since 2007 and served as prime minister from 1999 to 2001, taking time out from politics after he lost the election to the Likud's Ariel Sharon.

In a statement, Netanyahu said he "respects Defense Minister Ehud Barak's decision and thanks him for his cooperation in the government and highly appreciates his long-standing contribution to the security of the state".

The Hamas movement ruling Gaza saw Barak's decision to quit as proof that this month's Israeli assault on the enclave was a disaster.

"This is evidence of the political and military failure that the government of Netanyahu and his defense minister suffered," said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.

Israel has called its offensive a success, saying it destroyed most of Hamas's long-range rocket arsenal and killed the Islamist group's top militants.

IRAN STRIKE

A former commander in an elite commando unit, Barak tried unsuccessfully to make peace with both the Palestinians and Syria during his time as prime minister.

He was at the forefront of Israel's campaign for stronger international sanctions against Iran to halt what Israeli and Western leaders fear is a drive to produce nuclear weapons, allegations Tehran denies.

He has cautioned that Tehran was nearing a "zone of immunity" that would put deeply buried and fortified nuclear facilities out of reach of Israel's military capabilities, stoking international concern it could opt to strike Iran.

But last month, Barak told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper that an immediate crisis was avoided when Iran chose to use more than a third of its medium-enriched uranium for civilian purposes earlier this year.

He told the paper that the decision "allows contemplating delaying the moment of truth by eight to ten months".

Listing his achievements, Barak said he had led the defense establishment and the Israel Defense Forces through a rehabilitation after the second Lebanon war in 2006 and the building of capability to deal with the threat from Iran.

Barak's decision to call a news conference, with only two hours' notice, had touched off speculation he might announce the formation of a new centrist bloc to challenge Netanyahu's frontrunning Likud in the upcoming ballot.

Former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and ex-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert have been widely touted as possible candidates to lead such a bloc. Neither has announced their intentions, with only Livni widely expected to run.

Ruth Whippman: How Corporate America Is Turning Into a Cult and Why It's Harming the American Employee

I used to work for a large organization. One afternoon, all the staff in my department were herded into a giant conference room, and informed that due to budget cuts within the year over half of us present would lose our jobs. Fresh from a leadership course at the University of Corporate Doublethink, our bushy-tailed manager "reframed" the concept for us. "Don't see this as a negative" he advised. "We like to see this as us empowering you to take on new opportunities."

Over the last decade or so, a growing disconnect has developed between the bizarre and almost cult-like rhetoric and practices that companies use with their staff, and the increasingly grim reality of being an employee in modern day Corporate America.

For example, anyone stumbling upon the Walmart careers website might be forgiven for thinking that Google had malfunctioned and directed them instead to the Scientologists, whose recruitment site features a collection of testimonials virtually indistinguishable in their tone of robotic devotion.

Over at "Walmart People," Lois Givens, Personnel Manager at store number 992 assures us: "If you live your whole entire life according to the Walmart culture and three basic beliefs, life becomes a lot easier." Shana Bailey, Director of Store Operations emotes: "To this day, I continue to grow and learn, and the Walmart family is always there for me every step of the way," while Patricia Graham of the Distribution Centers adds: " Walmart is my Life (capitalization her own). When I think about it, it's amazing how many aspects of my life are touched and made better by Walmart."

For those of us whose lives have yet to be touched by the transformative miracle of the out of town superstore, these testimonials may seem a little excessive. But these are not rogue sycophants in the company ranks. According to Michael Bergdahl, former "Director of People" for Walmart's Headquarters, and now an international speaker and consultant on the company's practices, the creation of "cult-like commitment" and devotion to the so called "Walmart Way" among its employees is the explicit aim of the company's intensive staff training program for new recruits. And lest employees forget what they have learned on the course, loyalty is reinforced daily in stores with the "Walmart cheer," a compulsory devotional chant.

It's not just Walmart. Corporate songs are common, "reframing" disappointment for those whose lives have taken the road marked "middle manager" rather than the one marked "rockstar." "We built this Starbucks on Heart and Soul," "Blue Box Values Are the Best, I Work For American Express" and perhaps most uplifting, Big Four accountancy firm Ernst and Young's reworking of gospel anthem "Oh Happy Day" which replaced the lyrics: "When Jesus washed my sins away" with the competing message "When Ernst and Young showed me a better way."

Once they have whipped their staff into a frenzy of corporate sycophancy, employers are increasingly expecting them to turn their whole selves over to the company's message and aims, and are employing a range of sophisticated psychological and practical techniques to achieve this.

Silicon Valley firms encourage their employees to work ever longer hours by turning offices into playgrounds, complete with slides, graffiti walls and foosball tables. Free dinner and on site dry cleaners, dentists and hairdressers are standard ways of ensuring that staff never leave the building. Facebook made the perfect metaphor for the overworked American employee into a reality with their flagship 'Insanity Wolf' treadmill desk, which allows employees to keep running to a never materialising destination while they continue to work. I met (a rather tired looking) Facebook employee recently who was thrilled to be provided with pizza and "allowed" to work overnight on a company project of his choice at no extra pay.

The boundaries between self and company are further blurred as employers increasingly encroach onto personal territory in order to keep their staff firmly in the workplace and not outside it. Biotech firm Genetech will organize babysitters for its staff rather than have them take time off to stay at home with a sick child. Consulting firm Deloitte offers backup care for an elderly parent or grandparent. Human Resources philosophers have ditched the mantra "work life balance" for the more sinister (and employer friendly) "work life integration."

Corporations now aim to identify and satisfy employees' emotional needs as well as their financial ones. Major white collar employers such as UBS, American Express, KPMG and the law firm Goodwin Proctor have instituted "happiness training" for staff, drawing on a combination of psychological research and ancient religious traditions. Other employers sponsor their staff to go on courses such as the hugely popular Landmark Forum series, several full days in a group setting in which bathroom breaks are discouraged and participants are invited to share personally disturbing life events such as relationship problems and family breakdowns with the group and then go through a signature process to "heal" these issues and find lasting peace.

But while loyalty to an employer and pride in one's work can be important planks of self esteem, the increasing merge of self and company is a cultural shift that poisonously favors the employer over the employee. The more the relationship is characterized by unswerving devotion rather than genuine bargaining power, the more employers are able to encourage staff to work harder and longer, and the more they are able to suppress any meaningful dissent.

It's a strategy that's working. For all this cultish rhetoric, the power balance between employer and worker has not been loaded further in the employer's favor since the second world war. Executive pay and profits have skyrocketed while wages have stagnated and vast numbers of blue-collar workers are living below the poverty line, dependent on food stamps and government assistance just to get by. These two facts are not unrelated -- a JPMorgan economist calculated that the majority of increased corporate profits between 2000 and 2007 were the result of "reductions in wages and benefits."

Despite all this talk of "empowerment" American workers have now lost any real bargaining power they once had with their employers to change these conditions. Union representation, with its promise of better wages and benefits for workers, has reached a record low. The Walmart workers' strike comes after decades of methodical discouraging of union membership by their employers. They are not the only ones. Among others, Starbucks ("we're called partners because it's not just a job, it's our passion") lost in Federal Court after being accused of illegal union busting efforts and firing baristas for union activities.

White collar workers are affected by this trend too, with punishingly long hours at no extra pay now the norm. The average American employee spends a staggering month longer on the job each year than their 1969 counterpart and vast swathes of companies including Bank of America, Starbucks and IBM have been implicated in lawsuits for failing to pay their office staff appropriate overtime. Easy for bosses to dismiss as a necessary pulling together in tough economic times, this is a trend that long predates the recession and one from which those at the very top have only benefited.

It would seem that the more Corporate America demands cult-like devotion from its employees the worse it is able to treat them, and the less likely they are to complain. Yet given that the vast majority of Americans stand to lose rather than gain from this type of relationship, it is worth injecting a bit of healthy scepticism back into our assessment of our employers' motives. Now that really would be empowering.

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Travel Insurance Won't Cover Acts of War, Says Squaremouth ...

The cross-border rocket fire between Israel and Gaza has caused multiple deaths over several days of intense fighting. The unrest has put many travelers? plans in jeopardy, leaving them to contemplate cancelling travel arrangements, and hoping travel insurance will reimburse them for their losses. Squaremouth, America?s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, advises travelers that buying travel insurance for cancellation coverage due to acts of war might not be worth the extra buck.

?The recent events in Israel have prompted several calls from customers questioning their coverage,? says Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. ?Concerned travelers should know that war is generally excluded from coverage in travel insurance policies.?

Although war may not be covered by travel insurance, terrorism may be listed as a covered reason for cancellation and interruption. Harvey says travelers may not make the distinction between war and terrorism, but a travel insurance policy will. Terrorism is often defined as the unsanctioned and illegal use of violence that causes destruction, injury, or death. The implied purpose is achieving a political or religious goal. Travelers should keep in mind that in order to claim cancellation for terrorism, a policy may require the covered person be scheduled to arrive in the city where the incident occurs within a specified number of days.

Even fulfilling these requirements may not qualify terrorism coverage under some policies. A certificate may exclude terrorism coverage for any destination where a travel warning has been issued by the U.S. State Department when the coverage is purchased.

However, all is not lost with travel insurance when it comes to coverage for war or civil unrest. Travelers who have coverage under the ?cancel for any reason? benefit can be reimbursed for a percentage of their non-refundable trip costs. This benefit allows travelers to cancel their trips without having to provide a reason to the travel insurance provider. In order to claim, travelers must insure 100% of their trip cost and make the cancellation at least two days before departure.

?We usually try to talk travelers out of buying ?cancel for any reason? coverage because they typically don?t need it,? says Harvey. ?But war is one case where ?cancel for any reason? coverage could be beneficial.?

For those already traveling, Squaremouth advises checking the policy certificate for coverage under the non-medical evacuation benefit. The benefit will transport travelers from a place of danger to the nearest place of safety, or home, in the event of civil, political, or military unrest at the destination.

The key to utilizing a travel insurance policy to its full advantage is knowing how specific benefits apply. Travelers are encouraged to read and review the terms of coverage to understand what is excluded from coverage and how covered benefits are defined.

Cooking a Thanksgiving feast in Breezy Point

John Makely / NBC News

Thanksgiving on Breezy Point: Teri Dodge and her fiancee Steve Peterson drove from Portland, Maine to Breezy Point, NY on Wednesday to cook Thanksgiving dinner for up to 30 people.

By John Makely, NBC News

In the weeks since Superstorm Sandy sent a wall of water through Breezy Point and more than 100 homes burned to the ground, the battered neighborhood in Queens, N.Y., has seen a flurry of activity with relief workers, volunteers and utility crews creating traffic jams on the one road into town.

Thanksgiving Day in Breezy Point started with a few residents still cleaning up and dozens of crews working on the natural gas lines, but little else happening -- except over by the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department?where Teri Dodge and her fiancee Steve Peterson were in high gear cooking dinner in the parking lot.

John Makely / NBC News

Steve Peterson adjusts the heat under a deep fryer as a large turkey cooks.

Dodge and Peterson, who were recently engaged, drove from Portland, Maine, to Breezy Point on Wednesday and slept in their rented van next to the canned vegetables and coolers in the fire department's parking lot.

Thursday morning they started cooking for a guest list that kept getting longer. "First it was seven people, then we added 17 and now we're up over 30," Terri said as she carved one of eight turkeys.?

John Makely / NBC News

A deep-fried turkey is placed in a cooler to keep it warm until dinner is served.

Improvisation and outdoor cooking is not new for Terri and Steve. The couple run "A Lobster Affair" catering company in Portland, but cooking next to a flooded car in the middle of a town recently devastated by Sandy has offered some challenges. "We had to use bottle water to cook the potatoes - that was fun." The biggest challenge? "We need more side dishes, " she said as she mashed a pot full of steaming potatoes.

John Makely / NBC News

About 60 volunteers, police and firefighters enjoy a Thanksgiving meal prepared by Teri Dodge and her fianc? Steve Peterson at the Point Breeze Fire Department in Breezy Point, New York, Nov. 22.

Teri Dodge shows off the company patch she was given from Firefighter Sebastian Danese as she receives a round of applause for cooking Thanksgiving dinner at the Point Breeze Fire Department, Breezy Point, New York, Nov. 22.

Nearby,?Mathew Bruno and Ryan Pascuzzi of the Westchester Fire Academy handed out turkey sandwiches to whoever was hungry.

John Makely / NBC News

Ryan Pascuzzi, left, a cadet with the New Rochelle Fire Department, hands out turkey sandwiches to Finbar Devine, center, Tim O'Malley and Tom Ball on 216th Street in Breezy Point.

"You've got to do your part"?Pascuzzi said.?"We're going to be devoting our lives to helping other people, we might as well start with a tragedy down here."

"This is my community," Bruno added. "I've been down here every weekend doing what I can, pumping out people's basements. It makes your day when someone gives you a hotdog, a hamburger or a sandwich while you're working trying to do your part. I've been on that side of working and doing the construction and now it's time for me to come down here and do what I can."

John Makely / NBC News

John Dalton, left, and his nephew Al Dalton salvage items from a neighbor's house before the home is razed. The second floor furniture was moved to Dalton's house at the owner's request.

Elsewhere in Breezy Point, John Dalton was salvaging bedroom furniture for a neighbor whose house will be razed. "I'm thankful that no one got killed in this area," Dalton said.?

In a neighborhood hard-hit by Sandy, even people who are storm victims themselves find ways to bring Thanksgiving to others. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

Pietersen needs to trust his abilities, says Graham Gooch ? Cricket News Update

England?s batting coach Graham Gooch, on Monday advised Kevin Pietersen to trust his abilities if he is to regain the lost form and perform well in the remainder of the ongoing four-match Test series against India, at the latter?s backyard.

Kevin Pietersen, playing his first Test since returning to the side after the SMS controversy, which saw him losing his place in the team in the latter half of the South Africa series and the World T20 in Sri Lanka, managed to score just 17 and 2 runs before being bowled out cheaply by Ojha in both the innings.

Gooch, the leading run scorer in England Test history, said that the Natal-born batsman himself would be very unhappy with his performance in the first Test.

"Kevin will be very disappointed with both innings. He trains very hard and practises very hard, and has played well in recent times. But like other players, he has to trust his ability," said the England batting coach of KP?s twin failure in Ahmedabad.

"Obviously he wouldn't be happy with his return in this match or with the way he played, but he is strong enough and a big enough character to carry on working on his game. I'm sure he'll put it right," he added further.

Meanwhile, Gooch was extremely pleased with Essex star, Alastair Cook's performance in the lost Test. The left-hander played a stupendous knock of 176 runs, to give the tourists hopes of an improbable draw, as England reached 340 for 5 at stumps on day four, with the skipper and Prior still on the crease not out on 168 and 84 respectively. However, Ojha accounted for the settled duo on Monday morning to dash England?s hopes of a rare stalemate.

While speaking to media reporters after his side?s nine-wicket crushing at the hands of India, the former Essex veteran said that Cook?s startling knock remains unmatchable since it was played on the second last day of the match, in an extreme pressure situation.

"Alastair led from the front as captain. [It was] as good an innings as I've seen him play," said Gooch.

The second Test of the four-match series gets underway in Mumbai on Friday, November 23.

Chinese capitalism naturally gives rise to unprecedented inequality

20 million Chinese a year can now afford western style automobiles thanks to capitalism whereas 25 years ago no one could. But, almost half the population still lives at subsistence levels on rural subsistence farms.

Should the half still at subsistence be given welfare or should they be encouraged into the get rich Republican capitalist economy??

Behind-the-scenes details from Romney campaign leak

Romney's get-out-the-vote operation was comically inept. Obama barely prepared for the first debate. Romney spent $25,000 on victory fireworks. And more!

The presidential election is over, but the real story behind the race is only just emerging. After months of enough spin to make a washing machine envious, members of the campaigns are starting to let down their guard and dish some dirt to media outlets. From Mitt Romney's embarrassingly ineffective get-out-the-vote operation to President Obama's peevish attitude toward the debates, post-election autopsies have given political junkies a lot to mull over before they, yes, turn to the 2016 race. Here, eight behind-the-scenes revelations from the campaign:

1. Romney was shellshocked?by Obama's victory
Romney genuinely believed that he would become the nation's?45th president, and was "shellshocked" by his landslide loss. "I don't think there was one person who saw this coming," one senior adviser told Jan Crawford at CBS News. Why was Team Romney so certain of victory? They simply did not believe that younger voters and minorities would turn out the way they did in 2008. "As a result," says Crawford, "they believed that the public/media polls were skewed" in Obama's favor, and rejiggered them to show Romney with "turnout levels more favorable to Romney." In essence, Romney "unskewed" the polls, mirroring widely mocked moves by conservatives to show their candidate with a lead, epitomized by the now-infamous website UnskewedPolls.com. Romney's defenders say he had plausible reasons to believe Obama's turnout would be lower; less charitable commentators say Romney and his aides were stuck in a conservative media echo chamber at odds with reality.

2. Obama's get-out-the-vote operation was amazing
Obama's ground game relied on "an extraordinarily sophisticated database packed with names of millions of undecided voters and potential supporters," says The New York Times. The database allowed Obama's army of field workers to target new voters, register them, and get them to the polls. On Election Day, it became clear that the Obama campaign had altered "the very nature of the electorate, making it younger and less white," says The Times. "The power of this operation stunned Mr. Romney's aides on election night, as they saw voters they never even knew existed turn out in places like Osceola County, Fla."

3. Romney's get-out-the-vote operation was hopeless
The Romney campaign "came up with a super-secret, super-duper vote monitoring system that was dubbed Project Orca," says Byron York at The Washington Examiner. The so-called "mega-app for smartphones" was supposed to "link the more than 30,000 operatives and volunteers involved in get-out-the-vote efforts," in a bid to coordinate everyone's efforts and maximize turnout, say Maggie Haberman and Alexander Burns at Politico. But Project Orca was a complete and utter failure. The program crashed on Election Day, which meant that "workers on the ground didn't know what doors to knock on," say Haberman and Burns. The campaign was flying blind, relying on CNN and other media outlets to track turnout. "The end result," says John Ekdahl, a Romney campaign worker, at Ace of Spades, "was that 30,000+ of the most active and fired-up volunteers were wandering around confused and frustrated when they could have been doing anything else to help."

4. Obama underestimated Romney's debating prowess
In the run-up to the first presidential debate, Obama "displayed little concern" about the challenge ahead of him, and "his impatience with the exercise was evident," says The Times. He ended up walking "into a trap that Mr. Romney's advisers had anticipated: His antipathy toward Mr. Romney ? which advisers described as deeper than what Mr. Obama had felt for John McCain in 2008 ? led the incumbent to underestimate his opponent as he began moving to the center before the debate audiences of millions of television viewers." As a result, the president spent the rest of the campaign making up for "what was arguably the most dismal night of Mr. Obama's political career."

5. Romney was desperate for money
"The GOP nominee emerged late last spring from a long and bruising Republican primary season more damaged than commonly realized," say Sara Murray and Patrick O'Connor at The Wall Street Journal. Romney "had spent so much money winning the nomination" that he had to spend the first weeks and months of the general campaign touring fundraising meccas in "California, Texas, and New York ? none of which were important political battlegrounds." Romney raised about $800 million, but "paid a deep political price," giving the Obama campaign a large window of time to "define the Republican candidate on its terms."

6. Romney was beholden to Donald Trump
Perhaps the Romney campaign's "most fatal mistake was its tortured, 16-month quest to win the affection of rank-and-file conservatives via their most boisterous mouthpiece ? at the expense of everything else," says McKay Coppins at BuzzFeed. That would be Donald Trump, the country's most famous birther. "Trump's appeal to the Republican base was undeniable," and Romney spent a fair amount of effort winning his endorsement. But the "Trump stunt did not end up sending Tea Partiers marching en masse to the primary polls," and Romney's new ties to birtherism "became, increasingly, a political headache." The Obama campaign linked Trump with Romney at every opportunity, and Trump "required constant maintenance by the campaign to keep him from going completely off the rails."

7. Ann Romney cried when Obama won
When it was all over on Election Night, the GOP nominee called Obama to concede defeat. "Romney was stoic as he talked to the president," says CBS News' Crawford, "but his wife Ann cried." His running mate Paul Ryan "seemed genuinely shocked," while "Ryan's wife Janna also was shaken and cried softly."

8. Romney had purchased victory fireworks
"Things didn't go as planned for Mitt Romney on Election Day in more ways than one," says Glen Johnson at The Boston Globe. "The Republican was prepared to celebrate his election as the 45th president with an eight-minute fireworks display within view of his party at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center." The Romney campaign reportedly paid $25,000 for fireworks that "had a patriotic theme, heavy on red, white, and blue colors."

Supreme Court to hear key voting rights case

The Supreme Court will decide whether or not to scale back the landmark Voting Rights Act, which requires states with a history of discrimination at the polls to get federal permission before making any changes in how they conduct elections. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

By NBC's Pete Williams

Agreeing to hear another important case on race in America, the Supreme Court said Friday it will take up a battle over a key part of the landmark Voting Rights Act. Civil rights groups fear the court will use this case to gut the law.

Passed by Congress in 1965 and renewed four times since then, most recently in 2006, a key provision requires states with a history of discrimination at the polls to get federal permission before making any changes to election procedures -- from redrawing congressional district boundaries to changing the locations of polling places.

The law was at the core of the legal cases this year blocking strict new voter ID laws in Texas and South Carolina.

Shelby County, Ala., claims the pre-clearance requirement -- which currently covers nine entire states, 12 cities and 57 counties elsewhere -- is unconstitutional. Under the law, those states and areas are presumed to be acting improperly whenever they seek election changes and "must either go hat in hand to Justice Department officialdom to seek approval, or embark on expensive litigation in a remote judicial venue," says the lawyer for the county.

The areas covered by the law, Shelby County says, include some localities that have made substantial reforms while missing other parts of the country that have failed to root out discrimination at the polls.? "Florida has been forced into pre-clearance litigation to prove that reducing early voting from 14 days to 8 is not discriminatory, when states such as Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania have no early voting at all," the county says.

But the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund says the current map is a close enough fit to cover the areas of greatest concern.? "Congress is not a surgeon with a scalpel when it acts to legislate across the 50 states. But it can reasonably attack discrimination where it finds it," the group says.

Three years ago, the Supreme Court narrowly rejected a challenge to the pre-clearance? requirement but strongly suggested that several justices had doubts about its constitutionality, given recent electoral reforms. "Things have changed in the South," the court said in 2009.? "Blatantly discriminatory evasions of federal decrees are rare."

Last month, the Supreme Court heard another racially charged case, re-examining whether the nation's colleges can use affirmative action in admissions.

How to Get Apple Products for Less Money

You may want an iPhone, an iPad, or maybe a new Mac, but Apple products always seem pricier than their competition. Still, if you know a few secrets, you can get yourself a deal.

Apple is a very powerful company. They control the supply chain tightly and don't have rolling sales like other retailers and manufacturers. They also know that their reputation leads to a level of demand that justifies their relatively high prices. But that doesn't mean you have to pay the list price.

The One Day Apple Discounts its Products
Apple regularly discounts its products on Black Friday ? the day after Thanksgiving. Both in store and online, they offer 7-10% off popular items. That's about? $100 off laptops, $40 off the iPad, and $10 off the iPod nano. Best Buy usually discounts its Apple products, just a little more than the company itself. Last year, for example, they offered $45 off the iPad. But even those aren't always the best Black Friday deals for this gear.

Gift Card Deals
This holiday season, don't just look at the straight discounts advertised. Instead, look for gift card deals. Last year, if you bought an iPad at Meijer, they gave you an $80 store gift card with your purchase. If you bought an iPod touch at Toys R Us, they gave you a $50 store card. When you factor that in, these incentives may just save you more than a straight discount.

Student / Teacher Discounts
If you can prove that you are a teacher or a college student, Apple discounts its gear by about 10%. Start by finding the Education Pricing section of their website. Also, between June and September, Apple usually bundles products for students. For example, you might be able to buy a new Mac and get an iPod touch for free.

Older Models
Apple always marks down its products when a new one is announced. As soon as the iPhone 5 was announced, they cut the iPhone 4S from $199 to $99. When the new Macbook Pro came out, the previous model got a $100 discount right away. Sure, you may feel you have to have the latest model, but you also have to ask yourself: did the value to you of the previous model really drop by $100 overnight?

[Related: Is iPad Mini Worth Buying?]

As for year-round discounts, your best bet is buying refurbished from Apple.

Go to the Certified Refurbished section of their website, and find laptops and iPods for about 15% off, iPads for as much as 30% off, and more. Apple certifies these used products have been tested ? and they come with a one-year warranty.

Other Online Outlets
Sites like Amazon and Macmall offer everyday low prices that may end up beating other deals simply because they don't include sales tax. So be sure to factor that into your decision making.

BOXING

Igarashi retains title

Japan?s Toshiyuki Igarashi held on to his World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title with a narrow victory over Nestor Narvaes of Argentina on Saturday in Sendai, Japan. The 28-year-old defending champion, bleeding from both eyebrows, suffered a one-point penalty for butting, but connected with more punches. ?It was a narrow win. It was tougher than I had expected in my first defense of the title. I couldn?t fight well at all,? said Igarashi, who improved his record to 17 wins, including 10 KOs, with one defeat and one draw. Narvaes, 30, who is ranked seventh by the WBC, had stood at 19 wins, including nine KOs, with two draws and one null-and-void.

BOXING

Yamanaka KOs Rojas

Japan?s Shinsuke Yamanaka knocked out Tomas Rojas of Mexico on Saturday to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title in Sendai. The knockout came 36 seconds into the seventh round. It was Yamanaka?s second successful defense of the title he won in November last year, improving his record to 17 wins, including 12 KOs, and two draws. Rojas, 32, and ranked seventh in the WBC, now has a record of 39 wins, including 26 KOs, against 13 defeats, one draw and one null-and-void.

GOLF

No word yet on long putters

European Tour chief George O?Grady yesterday said he was awaiting word from golf?s rulesmaking bodies about a possible ban on long putters, following fierce debate among players. O?Grady, seated alongside USPGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem at a press conference during the WGC-HSBC Champions in southern China, confirmed the controversial move was under discussion. ?There?s certainly plenty of discussion. We?re waiting for notification from the rules-making bodies,? O?Grady said. ?I think they work to their own timetable, but the rules of golf are reviewed every four years, so it would have to be considered taking place at the beginning of 2016. We haven?t been formally informed by the R&A [Royal and Ancient Golf Club] or the USGA [United States Golf Association], but they have been talking.? The possible ban on the broomstick or belly putters, which can be held against the body to aid stability, has caused an outcry among players who have used them throughout their careers. Last year, Keegan Bradley became the first player to win a Major with a long putter at the PGA Championship. He was swiftly followed by Webb Simpson at this year?s US Open and Ernie Els at The Open.

CRICKET

SA draw in Aussie warm-up

Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla hit unbeaten half-centuries for South Africa as they warmed up for the first Test against Australia in a three-day match against Australia A, which ended yesterday in a draw. Smith made 60 and Amla 53 before retiring to allow teammates a chance for batting practice in South Africa?s only warm-up match ahead of the Test, which starts in Brisbane on Friday. Jacques Rudolph made 39, JP Duminy 31 and AB de Villiers 24, all shaking off some cobwebs as South Africa reached 277-6 in reply to Australia A?s first innings of 480-7 declared. Dale Steyn then captured the wicket of Liam Davis, adding to his first innings haul of 3-54, as Australia A reached 13-1 in 10 overs before the captains agreed to end the match.
