Pietersen needs to trust his abilities, says Graham Gooch ? Cricket News Update

England?s batting coach Graham Gooch, on Monday advised Kevin Pietersen to trust his abilities if he is to regain the lost form and perform well in the remainder of the ongoing four-match Test series against India, at the latter?s backyard.

Kevin Pietersen, playing his first Test since returning to the side after the SMS controversy, which saw him losing his place in the team in the latter half of the South Africa series and the World T20 in Sri Lanka, managed to score just 17 and 2 runs before being bowled out cheaply by Ojha in both the innings.

Gooch, the leading run scorer in England Test history, said that the Natal-born batsman himself would be very unhappy with his performance in the first Test.

"Kevin will be very disappointed with both innings. He trains very hard and practises very hard, and has played well in recent times. But like other players, he has to trust his ability," said the England batting coach of KP?s twin failure in Ahmedabad.

"Obviously he wouldn't be happy with his return in this match or with the way he played, but he is strong enough and a big enough character to carry on working on his game. I'm sure he'll put it right," he added further.

Meanwhile, Gooch was extremely pleased with Essex star, Alastair Cook's performance in the lost Test. The left-hander played a stupendous knock of 176 runs, to give the tourists hopes of an improbable draw, as England reached 340 for 5 at stumps on day four, with the skipper and Prior still on the crease not out on 168 and 84 respectively. However, Ojha accounted for the settled duo on Monday morning to dash England?s hopes of a rare stalemate.

While speaking to media reporters after his side?s nine-wicket crushing at the hands of India, the former Essex veteran said that Cook?s startling knock remains unmatchable since it was played on the second last day of the match, in an extreme pressure situation.

"Alastair led from the front as captain. [It was] as good an innings as I've seen him play," said Gooch.

The second Test of the four-match series gets underway in Mumbai on Friday, November 23.
